Andalucía: Food Forward + Knit and Crochet

Food Forward

Every month EngAGE delivers free Farmers Market food to a property through the Food Forward Program. On Andalucia’s recent turn to receive, 16 boxes of fresh produce were distributed to the residents. There was a beautiful array of fruits and vegetables that everyone enjoyed.

Craig Gibson teaches both Knitting and Crochet at Andalucia. We have needles for both knitting and crochet, and tons of yarn. Some of the students started on sweaters, and some are making other things for family members. Craig is an actor and has a beautiful, sonorous voice – the ladies are all quite smitten with him.

Giving Tuesday: Your Opportunity to Support the Work We Do at EngAGE

December 1st, Giving Tuesday, is a global day to celebrate giving back. Charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

We hope you’ll choose to give to EngAGE. We transform aging and the way people think about aging by turning affordable senior apartment communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness, and creativity.

And we transform people:

“It has benefited me so much. I came from the era when I would hear myself saying, ‘Oh, I’m just a housewife.’ Now, I can sit and I can say to you, I am an artist, I am an actor, I am a poet. Isn’t that wonderful?” ~ Jean, age 70

You can help us continue the transformations by sending a tax-deductible donation to:

EngAGE, Inc.
240 E. Verdugo Avenue, Suite 100
Burbank, CA 91502
Attn: Tim Carpenter, Executive Director

Learn more about EngAGE on our website and in this wonderful video, “A Dose of Creativity,”  produced by Aroha Philanthropies. Thank you!

Sterling Court: Gardening, Art, and Halloween Fun

Archstone -logoArchstone Foundation funded Second Harvest to provide Community Gardens to some of the properties to which they currently provide food.  Gratefully, Sterling Court is one of five EngAGE properties that receive free services, including a monthly Master Gardener on site, soil, fertilizer, seedlings, tools, and gloves. This is an organic, edible, community garden. Raised planters were built on site.  Regional Programs Director Meloney Morse: Gardeners planted their winter crops and are looking forward to harvesting new foods and spices. One resident commented that she wants to plant winter squash and make autumn soup with it.

2015_10-SC-2Art Class instructor Nicole Garlardo: We finished up still life paintings with details like background and shadows to show special relations. This student had a vision to do flowers and a girl smelling the flowers. She worked on that at home, and came to class to work and for critique.  We developed a collage of resident photos from EngAGE programming.  We also made a colorful border on poster-board of many patterns. We used markers, pen, color pastels, and crayon. Then we placed the pictures in the center to display in community room.

Site Leader Nicole Galarado reports that last month’s Halloween Potluck had a nice atmosphere, with Halloween decorations throughout the community room, and a DJ providing great music. There was a pumpkin decorating contest with four participants and everyone took a prize home. Everyone also danced a bit — several residents even did the Cupid Shuffle!

Worth Repeating: Peter Hubbell Wants Advertisers to “Get” Old

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 11/25/14:

WORTH-REPEATINGPeter Hubbell, CEO of the BoomAgers ad agency and author of The Old Rush: Marketing for Gold in the Age of Aging, argues that advertisers need to pay attention to older consumers, not just the younger crowd. Most of us would agree that we’re generally left out of all but specialized (read: negative/indicating decline/impairment/medical) marketing efforts. But Hubbell takes it a step further and now refuses to wear Levi’s jeans:

“Levi’s embodied my values of hard work, authenticity and patriotism,” he says. “Now I’ve aged out of their marketing cohort. I’m looking at their ads of these tattooed kids with messy hair, ripped clothing and pierced skin making out in the back of the car and I’m going: ‘That’s not my brand.’

“Either I no longer matter to them, which is disturbing to me after all my years of loyalty, or they truly don’t get the core values of their brand. So I went out of my way to find a new brand of jeans.”

It’s one thing to decide not to try a brand because their advertising doesn’t appeal to you, but would you leave a brand that works for you just because their advertising doesn’t? Read the interview with Peter Hubbell here, and be sure to read the comments!

[An interesting quote: “Everybody thinks aging people are trying to feel younger, but they’re simply trying to stay current.” And a hat tip to Ann Davis Garvin for the link.]

Coventry Court: Art Class

Art Class encourages freedom and creative expression, and lets residents express themselves through art without boundaries, limitations, or criticism. Instructor Toni Ivashkov: We’ve been focused on finishing up our impressionist oil paintings. This was a great exploration for many of the residents. Some discovered that they absolutely love working with oil paints. Others feel more comfortable with acrylics. Other students are also finishing up their hand portrait projects and transfer paintings.
