THE EJ JACKSON FOUNDATION marks its 33rd year of community service through its Annual Turkey Giveaway event. More than 12,000 turkey dinners will be given to families, many who line up well in advance of the distribution date, which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 24th this year. The location is 5924 West Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The Fred Jordan Mission‘s annual Thanksgiving banquet will serve turkey dinners to more than 2,000 homeless men, women and children on Skid Row. Thanksgiving day, starts at 8 AM at 445 Towne Avenue in downtown L.A. This will be their 71st celebration. 626.915.1981

The Midnight Mission‘s annual Thanksgiving Street Festival will serve about 2,000 meals on Thanksgiving day from 10 AM to 1 PM.  601 South San Pedro Street, Los Angeles. 213.264.9258 ext.1248

For four decades, Union Station Homeless Services has hosted a Thanksgiving dinner from 11 AM to 3 PM, Central Park, 219 So. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena. 626.240.4550

Westside Thanksgiving, from the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center, has three decades of tradition serving the community with a free sit-down Thanksgiving dinner. They also provide haircuts, blankets, clothing, hygiene kits, and a children’s carnival in the morning. Veterans, students, low-income families, seniors, anyone who is homeless, and anyone who is alone on Thanksgiving is welcome on Thanksgiving day, 11 AM to 3 PM on the campus of the Veterans Association, just off Wilshire Blvd., west of the 405 Freeway. Guadalupe Community Center offers their 27th Annual Free Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner for homeless and low-income families at 6933 Remmet Ave. in Canoga Park. They open at 9 AM. 818.340.2050

The Laugh Factory will have their 36th annual Thankgiving Feasts on Thanksgiving day at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. A live comedy show will follow each meal service. Central Community Christian Fellowship‘s 27th annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be served from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the church, 5623 Arlington Ave. in Riverside. If you’re in that neighborhood and are home bound, they will deliver a dinner to you. For home delivery, call 951.689.5806 to make a reservation.

Silverado Burgers will have their 12 annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1091 Sixth Street in Norco, in Riverside County. Hillbilly Reign will be performing live. Also if you are stuck working on the holiday, come by to get a to go box. Information: Brent 951.545.3697.

Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: Senior Olympics Champions + Ceramics Class

Despite the soaring heat, 15 Senior Olympic team members walked to the 14th Street Park with Coach Helene and active living expert Charlie Gandy to prepare for the big game day. Participants sharpened their skills on basketball free throws, tossing the football, ring flinging, and the walking and running relay races. The team even added some extra practice on their own, in hopes of winning the championship trophy!

At 7 am on the morning of the Games, our team met in the main lobby, boarded their team bus, and headed to the event site. Adorned in specially designed cut-up T-shirts created by team captain, Severina, our team made a grand, stylish entrance. Having won the championship last year when we participated in the games for the very first time, the pressure was on to see if we could possibly do it again. Despite the hot, 90-plus degree weather, our team stayed cool under the pressure. As EngAGE founder, Tim Carpenter shouted the cue, “LET THE GAMES BEGIN,” our LBSAC team led the Parade of Banners, which wrapped around the event field. The players then dispersed to the various event areas determined to give their very best.

The team members cheered for one another, they sweated, they laughed, and they played to win! After the field events the teams came inside the large community center and enjoyed lunch, which was followed by the performance competition for both individual and group performances. The competition was tough, with wonderful performances delivered by all the finalists.

As the judges tallied up the points for all 26 teams, the participants danced to the wonderful Rock & Roll group, J.E.S. Band, and waited anxiously for the results. No one was certain of the outcome until the final announcement was made that the 2015 Senior Olympic Champions were…THE LONG BEACH SENIOR ARTS COLONY!  Our team stood up and screamed with delight, jumping up and down with excitement and joy. Team LBSAC took to the stage to accept their medals, proudly holding the coveted Championship Trophy as they posed for pictures.

“Beginning Ceramics” class instructs residents on working with clay, from learning different techniques of building through glazing and firing the work. Instructor  Colette Brown focused on Throwing, Centering Techniques (review), and Compressing lip and base. She introduced new glazing mixing techniques and using glaze as a “glue” in addition to reviewing how to apply/where not to apply glaze. For the Coil pots, she reviewed techniques in Coiling, Slipping, and Scoring.

Piedmont: Senior Olympics + A Trip to MOCA

The annual EngAGE Senior Olympics brings seniors together from all of our communities in Southern California to compete, socialize, and have lots of fun. Transportation, food, and cheer are provided by EngAGE; smiling faces are provided by happy Piedmont Seniors and friends.

Fitness trainer Jack Witt loves living in Los Angeles and wants to share that love with EngAGE residents. He plans field trip excursions and takes residents of EngAGE properties on tours of local sites. The September trip was to MOCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art). “These field-trips are such a great way to see Los Angeles. I am having so much fun!” said a happy resident after the visit.

Tim Carpenter at Eisner Foundation Intergenerational Convening and Training Event

EisnerEngAGE Founder and Executive Director Tim Carpenter will be a panelist at the Eisner Foundation Intergenerational Convening and Training, and a trainer/facilitator for the Idea Incubator Session. The event will be on November 18th at the California Endowment’s Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles. EngAGE is grateful for the support of the Eisner Foundation for our “EngAGE Across Generations” programming.

Six “Purpose Prize” Winners Announced by Encore.Org

Encore.org is building a movement to tap the skills and experience of those in midlife and beyond to improve communities and the world.

The six 2015 winners of The Purpose Prize from Encore.Org have been announced by Purpose Prize Director Eunice Lin Nichols. EngAGE congratulates these exceptional people whose “second acts” are making significant contributions to the world:

  • Journalist Laurie Ahern, 61, became an advocate for children with disabilities held in abusive institutions, fighting torture, training activists and changing lives in 36 countries. ($100,000 Purpose Prize)
  • Micro-lending champion Patricia Foley Hinnen, 62, capitalizes on equality and economic justice through bonds that have funded 11,000 microloans in the fight against the “feminization of poverty.” ($25,000 Purpose Prize for Financial Inclusion, sponsored by MetLife Foundation)
  • Former Black Panther Jamal Joseph, 62, has created a refuge where thousands of young people escape the violence in their lives, learn leadership skills and create art for social change. ($25,000 Purpose Prize)
  • Samuel Lupin, 77, has modernized the tradition of house calls, with two generations’ support, bringing much-needed health care to 4,000 homebound elderly patients. ($25,000 Purpose Prize for Intergenerational Collaboration, sponsored by The Eisner Foundation)
  • Far beyond the pulpit, teacher-turned-Episcopal-priest Belle Mickelson, 67, helps young and old fiddle in harmony, building connections in 29 remote Alaskan villages. ($25,000 Purpose Prize for Intergenerational Impact, sponsored by The Eisner Foundation)
  • Former New York State Judge Laura Safer Espinoza, 62, moved from the courtroom to Florida’s growing fields bringing human rights and economic justice to over 30,000 farmworkers. ($25,000 Purpose Prize)

Solara Court: Olympics Fun + LOVE Picture Frame

The annual EngAGE Senior Olympics is an extension of EngAGE’s mission to keep our seniors active by bringing 30 properties together to compete in outdoor/indoor games. Site Leader Linda Myers: “We had twelve residents sign up, and eleven went and participated. Our great bus captain, Aurora Bayton’s watchful eye made sure everyone assembled on time and then got back on the bus after all the festivities were over. Mr. Nguyen won a gold medal for his fantastic photography, and Hong Song won silver for walking in her category. Solara Court is proud of their community.”

In preparation for the big event, the Art Class decorated Olympic t-shirts. They also painted LOVE picture frames. Instructor Linda Myers: In both classes, the residents were happy that they had something to take home and were pleased with what they had created. I had the opportunity to talk with the daughter of one of my students and she thanked me for having the class and told me how much her mother loves it.”
