SUNDAY 11/15 @ 5 PM PT
ORSON BEAN
and
GUILLERMO CIENFUEGOS
with Host ALICIA SEDWICK

Host Alicia Sedwick interviews comedian and actor Orson Bean and his director, Guillermo Cienfuegos, about his new one-man show, “Safe at Home,” playing at The Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, through November 29th.

A Reviews (stageandcinema.com) says: “In his autobiographical solo outing, Bean comes across as a delightfully avuncular fellow, equal parts relative from your last Thanksgiving dinner and movie star with a heart of glamorous gold. Particularly surprising is the subject’s unexpected modesty.”

Sterling Court: Gardening + Art + Pizza

Archstone -logoArchstone Foundation funded Second Harvest to provide Community Gardens to some of the properties to which they currently provide food. Gratefully, Sterling Court is one of five EngAGE properties that received free services to include a monthly Master Gardener on site, soil, fertilizer, seedlings, tools and gloves. This is an organic, edible community garden. Raised planters were built on site. Regional Programs Director Meloney Morse:  “Gardeners prepared to plant winter crops in October. They are savoring their last summer fruits and veggies.”

Art Class: Making art inspires creativity and gives residents an opportunity to socialize across cultural boundaries. Instructor Nicole Galardo: “This month we painted a still life using only monochromatic acrylic paint colors.  We set up objects in front of us to paint, using one color as a base.  We made highlights and shadows by adding black or white paint to our colors. We really grasped how contrast affects the objects and how when working with monochromatic colors you need to create contrast to keep the painting from being flat and muddy.”

Birthday Potluck: Seasonal and other social events are often by request of residents and bring them together across language differences. Site Leader Nicole Galardo brought a much appreciated ice cream cake to serve after a pizza dinner, accompanied by pleasant conversation among the residents.

Veterans Day

2015 Veteran's Day

To include and honor all veterans, not just those from WW I as was the case when the holiday was established in 1938, Congress voted to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in June 1954, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued  a proclamation that October to that effect. Read more about the history of the holiday here.

Andalucía: Senior Olympics + Aqua Aerobics

The Senior Olympics was a blast for the Andalucía residents. Jarome and Carol Baker won the Bronze medal in the Performance portion of the Olympics for the song that they wrote and sang with all of their hearts. Brother and Sister Donna and Michael didn’t play any games, but they participated in the warm-up and went around to watch all the events.

We had our first Aqua Aerobics class – in the hot tub! It is a sizable hot tub and so we have decided to use it for water exercise. It is not as hot as a warmed up hot tub, but it is warmer than a pool, and so periodically Instructor Tami Tirgrath has the residents get out and cool off — they work out by the side of the pool, or go inside to do some floor work or chair work in the air conditioned club room nearby. So far the residents are loving it and she has a devoted following. We are keeping the classes small for now, but if it continues to go this well, we can expand.

Senior Exercise is a new, slowly building class that incorporates chair Pilates, Senior Fitness for Arthritis Foundation, Tai Chi, and, in time, Zumba on alternate weeks.

The Metro @ Hollywood: Senior Olympics + Activities

2015_09-Hwd-1 2015_09-Hwd-5

Ten enthusiastic residents participated in the annual EngAGE Senior Olympics, which was such a great turn out because last year Hollywood had no attendees. Residents had so much fun that they are already making plans for next year’s Games!

In the Aerobic Movement class, residents engage in gentle, but active aerobic movement to improve their strength, cardiovascular health, and general physical well-being.    This month, Instructor Joella Gasparrolotito taught residents how to use rubber bands for better positioning and balance.  The residents agree that, in addition to being an excellent exercise class, this class is fun!

In Yoga Class, Joella teaches movements that help improve balance, flexibility, strength, and relaxation. The class continues to be quite popular with the Hollywood Metro residents. Joella also encourages students to stay hydrated when practicing yoga.

In the Computer Basics Class, Instructor Andres Garcia teaches more than computer basics; he also works with students to enhance their English language skills. Recently, residents typed their own poems to recite to the class.

Worth Repeating: Steven Politis – Retired Engineer, Advanced Math Tutor

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 11/5/14:

WORTH-REPEATING“Remember all those lunar experiments astronaut Neil Armstrong had to carry out after he took mankind’s first steps on the moon and planted the American flag? Politis was on the elite team of engineers that developed them at Northrop Grumman … ‘I’d like to work with the smartest math students in school and help get them ready for algebra in middle school,’ Politis told Adria Metson, magnet coordinator at Welby Way Elementary School in West Hills. ‘I’ll give you a 10-year commitment.’ A 10-year commitment from an 87-year-old man.” That was 10 years ago, and he continues to teach for LA Unified School District! Buckingham: Impromptu Wellness Workshop + Hand-Crafting

Instructor Sidni Appleseed Myles led an impromptu wellness workshop focused on the healing properties of lavender, lemon verbena, and rosemary. Residents worked with fresh herbs to make a sachet and discussed the uses of each herb. “I feel calmer already!” said a resident sniffing the aromatic sachet he’d just made.

The once a week Recycled Jewelry-Making Workshop teaches residents how to make beautiful works of jewelry art out of recycled materials. Instructor Wan provides years of experience and jewelry making knowledge, as he educates residents on using different techniques and mediums. “Look what I made!” said this excited resident wearing a beaded necklace she designed in class.
