ANDRE MIRIPOLSKY’s keen understanding of pop imagery and energy launched a dynamic career that resulted in work with Elton John (the famous 1980 Concert in Central Park “Piano Keys” costume) and Bette Midler (album package/visual design for her 1982 worldwide “DeTour”), as well as Quincy Jones, The Rolling Stones, Gato Barbieri, Robin Williams, Beastie Boys, Cheap Trick, MTV, and “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. For thirty years, he has continued to explore and discover creative wonders in his Kingdom of Color. Miripolsky serves on the boards of the L.A. Art Alliance, the Downtown Artwalk, and the Hollywood Arts Council.

PomonacopiaAndre has just completed a massive new “Art and Architecture” project called “Pomonacopia” for The School of Arts & Enterprise’s new middle school located on 325 S Main Street in downtown Pomona. See more here and here.

2015 Fall Artwalk postcard

Mitzella, President of the Brewery Artwalk Association, joins us to talk about the upcoming Artwalk. The BREWERY ARTWALK is a twice a year open studio weekend at the world’s largest art complex in downtown Los Angeles. With over 100 participating resident artists (including a number of senior artists), visitors will have the opportunity to see new work, speak with the artists, and purchase artwork directly from the artists’ studios. Coventry Court: Summer Party

Metro Chinatown: Conversational English

The weekly conversational English class for non-English speakers develops and strengthens English language skills. The class offers an informal, yet structured program. Last month, residents showed up to class eager to learn new material. Cross-cultural community building is a bonus!

EngAGE 2015 Senior Olympics Video!

Congratulations to all of the participants in the 2015 EngAGE Senior Olympics which took place on Saturday. the 19th, at Cerritos Park East! And extra cheers go to the winning team from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony! All of our talented, motivated seniors worked very hard to prepare for this annual event. Thanks to EngAGE Creative Programs Director Helene Weinberg for putting together an exciting video of the day (5:05) that gives a taste of what it was like to be there. Thanks also to the wonderful sponsors and volunteers without which these games would not be possible! “In February, Mary Beard, a classics professor at the University of Cambridge, gave a lecture at the British Museum titled ‘Oh Do Shut Up Dear!’ With amiable indignation, she explored the many ways that men have silenced outspoken women since the days of the ancients. . . . Beard, in her unapologetic braininess, is a role model for women of all ages who want an intellectually satisfying life. . . . But in recent years, and somewhat to her surprise, Beard has found herself cast in the very public role of a feminist heroine. Through her television appearances, she has become an avatar for middle-aged and older women, who appreciate her unwillingness to fend off the visible advancement of age. Beard does not wear makeup and she doesn’t color her abundant gray hair. She dresses casually, with minor eccentricities: purple-rimmed spectacles, gold sneakers. She looks comfortable both in her skin and in her shoes—much more preoccupied with what she is saying than with how she looks as she is saying it.”

NEA Chairman Jane Chu to Visit NoHo Senior Arts Colony

Next week EngAGE will be site-visited by the Chairman of the National Endowment for
the Arts, Jane Chu. Jane is the top-ranking arts administrator in the country. She will be visiting us as part of a tour of a handful of innovative arts programs in Los Angeles. Read the NEA’s press release on the event for details. We are grateful to have program support from the NEA, and we are very proud to be selected as part of this group for our innovative work in artful aging.
