As a salute to National Hispanic Heritage Month, host Dr. Connie Corley converses with producer/director/writer Betsy Kalin about her latest documentary on Boyle Heights, EAST LA INTERCHANGE.  The documentary explores how the freeways – a symbol of Los Angeles ingrained in America’s popular imagination – impact Boyle Heights’ residents: literally, as an environmental hazard and structural blockade, and figuratively, as a conversational interchange about why the future of their beloved community should matter to us all. The film screens locally on Thursday October 8 and Saturday October 10. Get details here.

Plus, learn about important events that support increased awareness of both dementia and depression:  Congressman Adam Schiff’s discussion of the impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on communities (Oct. 25 at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital); the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s events; and the 25th year of National Depression Screening Day on October 8.

Magnolia @ Highland: Healthy Meals in Mason Jars + Paintings for the Senior Olympics

The twice-monthly participatory Healthy Cooking Class instructs residents on healthy eating and food preparation choices. This month’s recipes: Mason Jar Salad & Trifle Dessert.  Instructor Angela Ho: “We focused on how to food prep healthy meals that could be easily stored in a mason jar. The residents made a raspberry vinaigrette, cranberry, walnut, cashew, apple, celery, chicken salad with a mix of greens. They really enjoyed this idea because of its simplicity and how beautiful the salad looks when you layer the ingredients. Residents were excited to try this food prepping idea outside of class. We also introduced a trifle dessert with zero sugars as an alternative sweet dish for those who are diabetic or prefer not to eat too many sugars. Residents’ feedback was positive and friendly. They especially enjoyed the Mason jar salad recipe.”

Regional Programs Director Alma Wright: “Angela incorporates cooking with very informative Power Point presentations. She also lets her students participate in the cooking process, rather than just watch.”

RPD and Instructor Alma Wright: “It has been an exciting month for the class! In the last four weeks, we have managed to complete 18 individual paintings and have applied 2 coats of varnish to each one. My husband and I made the frame to fit the pieces perfectly, and the residents had fun staining it. All of them told me they had never applied stain to wood before. They all followed my tips on the subject and sure had fun getting a bit messy while doing it. Even Western Senior Housing Assistant Manager Valerie Suaste took a break from work for a few minutes to help us out, and totally enjoyed the staining process. My students are looking forward to seeing their collective painting on display at the Senoir Olympics Art competition in September. After that, they would like me to hang it permanently in their community room above the piano. I’ve asked WSH Manager Jujuana Story if this would be okay with her, and she has agreed to it. I can’t wait to see the pride in their faces when it’s finally up there on the wall.”

Magnolia @ 9th: Winding Down the Summer Garden + Pillowcase Dresses

A new community garden has been formed with the purpose of growing herbs, fruits and vegetables to share among the residents. Gardeners are learning how to grow specific plants according to the season, and will eventually learn to prepare delicious, healthy dishes using their harvests. Instructor Doreen Lamothe: “The summer garden is slowly coming to an end and we are planning for the winter garden.  Celeste and Charlene come each week to help, and Sandra continues to do the lion’s share of the work. Western Senior Housing Manager Julio Martinez also mentioned that he’s very happy with the garden! The residents look forward to the harvest each week!” Regional Programs Director Alma Wright: “Doreen was on vacation the first two weeks of the month, but the Gardening Club residents didn’t miss a beat and took care of things while she was away.”

Art Class Instructor Robyn Holt: “August was a busy month as we planned for the Senior Olympics in September, which the residents were very excited about. And we also decided to have an art exhibition on Monday, October 19th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents combined efforts to finish their pillow case dresses for the charitable organization, Little Dresses for Africa. My mom finished the strapping and all machine sewing on 15 dresses and Sandra completed 5. My mom also sewed the [Senior Olympics] banner material and prepped it for painting. The students had to work together on a design and it went really smoothly. It took a club effort as we have normally done solo projects. Even the quilting squares were done as a group.”

La Coruña: Light, Summer Cooking

This month the Cooking Class made a Crispy Romaine Lettuce Summer Salad, with Smoked Salmon and Lemon Dill Dressing. Instructor Anne Apra is a professional caterer who has been teaching cooking classes at La Coruña for almost two years. Residents love to learn new, light, affordable recipes for healthy eating!

Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: Art Workshop + the Needlecraft Queens

The LBSAC Art Workshop has been finishing up their charcoal still life drawings. They are now venturing into oil painting, working from impressionist paintings.

The dedicated Needlecraft Queens enjoy creating handmade, customized projects. In August, three members of the group joined EngAGE Creative Programs Director Helene Weinberg to visit Miller Children’s Hospital to donate over 100 hats that they created in class. They were given a tour of the hospital and received a lovely thank you note for the donation.  The group is now working on creating small “comfort blankets” and plans to donate those to the hospital in the near future. They are also working on projects to include in the Holiday Craft Show later this year.

WORTH-REPEATING

Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide (SPARC) is a residency administered by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) in partnership with local arts councils in each borough and funded by the Department of the Aging. The initiative, which brings artists into New York City’s senior centers, is entering its fourth year, with a call for proposals due at the end of September. The six-month residency places 50 teaching and practicing artists in as many senior centers across the five boroughs, and last year attracted applications from 130 artists. EngAGE was site-visited on 9/23 at NoHo Senior Arts Colony by the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Jane Chu. Jane is the top-ranking arts administrator in the country. She visited us as part of a tour of a handful of innovative arts programs in Los Angeles. You can get the event details on the NEA’s press release. We are grateful to have program support from the NEA, and we are very proud to have been selected as part of this group for our innovative work in artful aging.
