Mark Komrad

Mark S. Komrad, MD, is the author of the acclaimed book, You Need Help! A Step-by-Step Plan to Convince a Loved One to Get Counseling. Dr. Komrad is a psychiatrist on the clinical and teaching staff of Sheppard Pratt Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,  Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland, and on the  teaching faculty of Oceania University of Medicine in Samoa. For 25 years he has treated patients and advised people on how to convince an emotionally or behaviorally troubled loved-one to accept psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

Last week, Dr. Komrad was inducted into the prestigious American College of Psychiatrists, an organization of only 750 psychiatrists from around the world.   

“Membership in The College is by nomination and extensive review, limited to psychiatrists who have demonstrated outstanding competence in the field of psychiatry, and who have achieved national recognition in one of the following fields: clinical practice, research, academic leadership, and teaching.”

“It’s like up-cycling the neighborhood — connecting existing resources to make them work,” García explains. ” For example, all this workforce that’s unemployed, all these empty spaces that are without use, all these elderly people that need help, all these natural resources that are not being taken care of — making a project for all these things.”

Gray and Stylish

In 2013, a conference at the London College of Fashion “announced itself with a chat with Advanced Style’s Ari Seth Cohen, followed by a quick blast of exercise led by the alarmingly supple and energetic Daphne Selfe and rounded off with Sue Kreitzman styling up That’s Not My Age blogger Alyson Walsh – who finished the evening looking pretty fabulous. Speaking of which, you will surely recognise both Sue and Daphne from Sue Bourne’s documentary, Fabulous Fashionistas. My word, has that programme started something – I believe we have the seeds of a revolution.” Read more here.

In 2014, The Invisible Woman, writer of the regular column, “The Vintage Years,” for the UK’s The Guardian, talks about her frustration with what fashions are offered to older women and announces a quest to find designers who offer what really does work. In 2015, fashion advertising embraced the older model:  “For the last three years at about this time — which is to say, in the nascent days of the new year, when the calendar lies clear and the sense of possibility is at its apex — Selfridges, the British department store, has dedicated its windows, all 13 of them, to a new class of Bright Young Things: dozens of up-and-coming stars of fashion and art, including names like Simone Rocha, Christopher Shannon and Maarten van der Horst, who it thinks will shape what we wear and how we shop in the year to come.

“But this year, things look a bit different. [This year], the emporium will unveil its first windows of 2015, all dedicated to the work of Bright Old Things (BOTs): 14 men and women of a certain age, who changed careers late in life, moving into the worlds of fashion and art at a time most people start thinking about saying goodbye to fashionable things.”

Ian McKellen on Working

FILM“Ian McKellen was in Berlin [recently] in support of his performance as Sherlock Holmes in Bill Condon’s well-received drama ‘Mr. Holmes.’ The film, an adaptation of the novel, A Slight Trick of the Mind, by Mitch Cullin, picks up with the former detective, now 93, as he reflects on his life and deals with deterioration of his once incredible mind. Unlike the character he portrays onscreen, McKellen, 75, is still very with it and busier Work Zonethan ever. Astronomer Jill Tarter, 70, has dedicated most of her career to answering one question: Are we alone in the universe? Dr. Tarter is the outgoing director of the Center for SETI Research. Her astronomical work is illustrated in Carl Sagan’s novel Contact. In the film version of Contact, the protagonist Ellie Arroway is played by Jodie Foster. Tarter conversed with the actress for months before and during filming, and Arroway was “largely based” on Tarter’s work. Click here to read an interview with this award-winning scientist.
