Robert PengROBERT PENG wrote a brilliant book, along with Rafael Nasser, called The Master Key: Qigong Secrets for Vitality, Love and Wisdom. In his book he describes how he healed from a heart ailment at a young age through Qigong. The wisdom of his master healer is now the legacy he carries forward in his teaching and healing throughout the world. Robert will talk about the practice of qigong, and we’ll experience a taste of this ancient healing art with him.

 

Robert will be at the Super Qi Summit at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, on May 22 – 25, 2015.

Forty Years of “Saturday Night Live”

Lorne Michaels, the creator and longtime executive producer of “Saturday Night Live,” helmed a 40th anniversary special, broadcast Feb. 15th, that brought back many famous alumni, including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell. It also brought back a lot of memories. Two weeks prior to the broadcast, Michaels reminisced for the New York Times.

And now there’s “Saturday Night Live: The Book” (Taschen Books), which contains 500 pages of behind-the-scenes photographs and details about the show’s history. From the publisher:

“On October 11, 1975 at 11:30 p.m., NBC viewers who tuned in to the network’s new late night show saw a sketch featuring John Belushi repeating, in a thick foreign accent, nonsensical phrases about wolverines being read to him by head writer Michael O’Donohue. Abruptly, O’Donohue clutched his heart and collapsed onto the floor. Belushi paused, raised his eyebrow, and then did the same. Posing as the stage manager, Chevy Chase entered the set and feigned confusion before breaking character and announcing to the camera: ‘Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!’

“In that instant, television, which had long been out of touch with the young and hip, experienced the first seismic tremors of a major paradigm shift. TV comedy as we know it today owes it all to Saturday Night Live, the show that dared to take risks (not least the fact that it’s broadcast live), challenge the censors, and celebrate the work of offbeat writer-performers.”

Crosby, Stills, Nash & (sometimes) Young

Crosby, Stills, & Nash, all in their 70s, are taking to the high seas in September for a series of concerts aboard the Queen Mary 2 as she crosses from New York to London. They’ll also be touring (on land) later this year in Japan and the U.S.

They first performed with Neil Young at Woodstock, 46 years ago. Get the story behind that story here.

Debra Borda, President & CEO of the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra

MUSIC“Debra Borda is one of the most successful arts leaders in the country. In her 15 years as the L.A. Phil’s president and chief executive, she has presided over the opening of Disney Hall, amassed the largest budget of any U.S. symphony and instilled a corporate savviness that has increased the orchestra’s endowment nearly fivefold to $222 million. . . .

“Her key accomplishment has been to keep the Phil relevant — and prosperous — at a time when fewer people nationwide want to buy season tickets to the symphony, especially an on-demand young generation that prefers a la carte programming with a contemporary edge. Borda and Dudamel have kept the classics, but they have expanded the repertoire. The Phil has commissioned 10 works this season — more than any U.S. orchestra — and its Green Umbrella series features genres as varied as Minimalism and the European avant-garde. Many orchestras are innovating, but Borda is a master at fitting the pieces of art and commerce together.”

When Presidents Day Was Bicycle Day

A bit of history from the days before Presidents Washington and Lincoln had to share a day of celebration:

“Every year, Americans mark Presidents Day with an orgy of auto sales, kicking-off the car-buying season. Our celebration of George Washington’s birthday is now firmly intertwined with the automobile, a testament to the powerful grip of car culture upon our civic imagination. “Through documentary photographs, conceptual installations, and videos, Carrie Mae Weems is known for raising difficult questions about the American experience. When the MacArthur Foundation awarded her a 2013 ‘genius’ grant, it cited Weems for uniting ‘critical social insight with enduring aesthetic mastery.’ The artist and activist is the subject of a major traveling career retrospective, which was at Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center in the fall and opens January 24 at its final stop, the Guggenheim Museum in New York.” Read more here. Johnny Cash Love Letter Voted Most Romantic

FYIA love letter from Johnny Cash to June Carter Cash on her 65th birthday has been voted “the most romantic of all time” in a Valentine’s Day poll by the UK’s Daily Mail. The poll was commissioned by British life insurance company Beagle Street to encourage Brits to be more romantic on February 14th.
