Spark is a spoken word series founded by Jessica Tuck in 2001.
Each month the Spark producing team chooses seven storytellers to write and read true stories from their lives inspired by the current Spark theme.
Over the years Spark has cultivated an intimate, authentic space that attracts storytellers who reveal their most intimate selves – candidly, humorously, and with heart.
Spark’s storytellers come from all walks of life – many have never been on stage before and most are not professional writers. For Spark it’s about great stories, and its dedicated team of producers work with participants to help them find their most authentic voice and craft their stories.
Shelagh Ratner, Adam Paul, and Elizabeth Payne are the featured storytellers in this week’s show.

Experience Talks Host Dr. Connie Corley in Wall Street Journal Article
Dr. Connie Corley is quoted in the WSJ article, “Where Older Entrepreneurs Can Find Help,” which focuses on free and low-cost resources for entrepreneurs of all ages.
Connie took a class at eProv Studio, part of SeniorEntrepreneurshipWorks.org. eProv Studio aims to help people ages 50 and older “identify as an entrepreneur,” says founder Elizabeth Isele, who was a guest of Connie’s on a recent Experience Talks radio show (listen here).
Connie also attended a Kauffman FastTrac class for baby boomers because, as she said in the article, she wants to be open to new possibilities.

E.L. Doctorow at National Book Festival on August 30th
The 83-year-old editor, professor and novelist, E.L. Doctorow, has won this year’s Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. The author of such celebrated historical novels as Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, and The March will receive the award during the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 30. A Body-Building Champion Helps Build Senior Bodies
Martin Luther King Addo is a two-time winner of the Mr. Ghana bodybuilding championship. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1999 and became a certified personal trainer. He now works out of his own storefront gym that he opened last summer inside Southbridge Towers, a housing development in Lower Manhattan that is home to many older adults.
Pete Molinelli, a court officer who lives in Southbridge Towers, said that the building’s seniors used to be “just kind of shut in.” And then Mr. Addo arrived.
“All of a sudden, it’s like there are all these new people in the neighborhood,” Mr. Molinelli said. “But no, they’ve been here forever. Addo brought them out.”

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 6/30 /13:
“California houses one of the country’s biggest populations of elderly prisoners. And gradually, it also releases them. Research has shown that the older the person is, the less likely he is to return to prison after his release. People over 65 have about a zero percent chance of returning to prison. But leaving prison at an older age brings other challenges. A 2008 study found that 21 percent of California’s older parolees were homeless or living in a shelter.” In San Francisco, they can turn to the Senior Ex-Offender Program for help.
