SHIVA REA is a leading figure in yoga as a teacher and now as an author. She holds retreats all over the world, and her classes are a peak attraction at festivals such as Bhaktifest and Shaktifest. Shiva founded the SaMUDRA Global School for Living Yoga, emerging from her worldwide travels and studies in UCLA’s World Arts and Culture program, plus her training in dance, tantra, and Ayurveda.

Shiva’s recent book, Tending the Heart Fire: Living in Flow with the Pulse of Life, is published by Sounds True. Learn more about Shiva at her website.

Shiva will be at SHAKTIFEST, a festival of music, yoga, and workshops in the desert, coming up May 16 – 18 in Joshua Tree, California.

Also on this program you’ll hear the music of Jai Uttal (from his CD, “Shiva Station”) and  Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda. Jai will also be at Shaktifest, and Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda will be at Shaktifest as well as in concert in Santa Monica on Sunday, May 25.

Community Photo Albums: February

February brought celebrations of Valentine’s Day and Black History Month, healthy eating workshops and tasty meals, ever-popular drum circles, a workshop to explain those sometimes difficult to use cell phones, a visit from the Irish group Klawitter (Hedda and fellow musicians travel from Ireland each year to collaborate with EngAGE to sing traditional Irish songs and tell stories collected from Irish seniors, then gather some stories from our residents to take home with them), a new French language class, continuing residents’ improv comedy performances (check out www.seniorfunnytv.com to see their videos), and an EngAGE Senior Olympics victory party at Villa Anaheim (the community that took home the trophy this year). All this and much more were enjoyed by our EngAGE Community residents! Click on any of the pictures below to enlarge them.

Sushi Chef Yosuke Imada

Work ZoneYosuke Imada is among Japan’s most renowned sushi chefs. Mr. Imada, 68, heads Kyubey, a family-run sushi restaurant in Ginza, Tokyo, with branches in Osaka and four major hotels.  Mr. Imada explains what makes a good sushi chef:

“It takes at least 10 years to become a sushi chef. You have to be patient. It’s a slow system. The most important thing is spirit. You need to understand that you never graduate, you never stop learning, not until you die. I have been working for more than 50 years. I made sushi yesterday – and I know that today’s sushi will be better than yesterday’s. It’s an endless process. Skill and experience are important but ultimately, your spirit is the most important ingredient.”

Portofino Villas in Pomona Participates in American Museum of Ceramic Art “Tea Bowl” Project

From EngAGE Regional Programs Director Robin Hart reports on a wonderful new class:

On Friday, March 28th, twelve residents participated in a project with the Pomona-based American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA), constructing personalized, ceremonial Tea bowls. AMOCA Community Outreach Program Coordinator Jennifer  Grace, was joined by Education Manager Angie Reyes  at Portofino, to first introduce the focus of AMOCA as well as the concept behind the Tea Ceremony and the symbolism of a container holding tea.  Via DVDs, various tea ceremonies from around the world were shown.

Residents were also introduced to two principles, sabi and wabi. “Wabi” represents the inner, or spiritual, experiences of human lives. “Sabi,” on the other hand, represents the outer, or material imperfection of life, also the original nature of things.  Residents constructed their own bowls during this session, encouraged to allow inner expression as well outer creative impulse (imperfections and all!) to predominate.

In future sessions, the bowls will be fired at AMOCA and then glazed, on site.

Residents will conclude the project by conducting their own tea ceremony facilitated by Robin Hart.

“Wizard of Oz” Film Is 75 This Year

FILMThe Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 American musical fantasy film based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, was feted at the Academy Awards ceremony this year to honor its 75th anniversary. We thought it would be fun to look behind the scenes of this family movie favorite. Save the Date! EngAGE in Creativity: Blues for Bobbee

This year’s event is dedicated to our colleague and friend, Bobbee Zeno. Please join us to honor and celebrate his life and legacy!

Blues for Bobbee postcardBobbee was the first Program Director at the Burbank Senior Artists Colony, where he created a community where there was none before he went there. He was also the Founding Producer and Host of the “Experience Talks” radio show which he co-produced with Tim Carpenter for the past eleven years.

He was a passionate arts advocate and, maybe in part because he came from New Orleans, he had a special place in his heart for music.

From Tim Carpenter: “Bobbee opened my world to so many amazing people, artists, Angelenos. He was the great connector, he made me smile, and his laugh could lift you up. Working with him on ‘Experience Talks’ and listening to his radio shows, ‘Blues Power’ and ‘Culture-Vortex’ made life bigger, grander, like him. He was loved and will be missed by many.”
