Video: EngAGE Partnered with UCSF on Study of Effects of Arts on Well-Being of Older People

With a research study grant made possible by the California Arts Council, EngAGE partnered with UCSF on a unique Ceramics Arts Research Study.  Interviews for participants were held in March, 2018, and 20 residents were selected for the 12-week study at Long Beach Senior Arts Colony. The weekly classes were facilitated by instructor Colette Brown and her assistant, Kana.

During the study, participants worked on a series of projects designed to encourage creativity while adhering to a structured progression.

At least half of the residents were first-time art students and never had stepped into the art studio before. The sessions started with a brief coffee/tea time where residents could socialize and get to know one another. As they faced their first lump of clay, they were tentative, yet their work evolved into what became an art explosion as evidenced by the culminating event exhibit. Here’s the video.

Follow-up interviews conducted by UCSF research assistants were held shortly after the event. Throughout the 12-week research study, participants remarked about how enjoyable the experience was and how proud they felt of the beautiful ceramic pieces they created.  Comments from the class:

“This class made me happy.”

“I want to continue to create art.”

“I never knew I could do this!”

“I am proud of myself.”

And we couldn’t be more proud of our LBSAC participants!

~ Helene Weinberg, Program Director at Long Beach Senior Arts Colony, Long Beach, CA

The results of the study, led by Julene K. Johnson, were published last month in Arts & Health Journal: “Exploring the effects of visual and literary arts interventions on psychosocial well-being of diverse older adults: a mixed methods pilot study.”

Experience Talks ZoomCast 8/26: Chip Conley

You’ll get an email confirmation with a link to join the ZoomCast!

Rebel hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Chip Conley disrupted his favorite industry… twice. At age 26 he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming an inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. He sold JdV after running it as CEO for 24 years, and soon the young founders of Airbnb asked him to help transform their promising start-up into the world’s leading hospitality brand. He served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years and today acts as the company’s Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership.

Chip’s five books have made him a leading authority at the intersection of psychology and business. Chip was awarded “Most Innovative CEO” by the San Francisco Business Times; is the recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, the Pioneer Award; and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University.

Chip’s latest book, Wisdom@Work, is part manifesto and part playbook, and ignites an urgent conversation about ageism in the workplace, calling on us to treat age as we would any other type of diversity. He makes the case that experience is on the brink of a comeback. At a time when power is shifting younger, companies are finally waking up to the value of the humility, emotional intelligence, and wisdom that come with age. And while digital skills might have only the shelf life of the latest fad or gadget, the human skills that mid-career workers possess–like good judgment, specialized knowledge, and the ability to collaborate and coach–never expire.

LA County Food Programs Are Vital During Pandemic

Low income residents in our Los Angeles County communities always appreciate the much-needed, regular deliveries of fresh, healthy food that they receive from our Food Service partner, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. But during this pandemic, minimizing the number of trips they have to make to the store while still having access to fresh food literally can be lifesaving.

BSAC Program Director Megan Hocking distributes boxes of food.

Thanks to Burbank Senior Artists Colony Program Director/LA County Food Coordinataor Megan Hocking for providing information about this program:

In June, LA County communities received a total of 29,550 pounds of food.

Seventeen volunteers made sure that 1,182 residents received their boxes.

The value to each resident was $62.50, making a total cash value of $73,875!

The intangible value is priceless.
