In early 2012, Max Izenberg Googled local Los Angeles resources for seniors, and all she found were assisted living homes, nursing homes, and anything and everything pertaining to elder care issues. When she couldn’t find anything relating to senior activities, she decided to make a website of her own. At the Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly on 30 Wallingford Road in Brighton, MA, about 300 of the 900 residents are Chinese. Classes in cooking, art, exercise, and more are available. (Sounds like an EngAGE community!) A resident says,”When we have house meetings, they take place in four languages: English, Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin.” 
“In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. . . . International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication.” 
Baseball season is underway and that prompted this post. It’s not unusual for a young girl to want to play team sports, but that wasn’t always the case. Maria Pepe, now 52, is credited with opening the door for millions of girls to play Little League softball. In 1972, eighteen years after the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (immortalized in the film, A League of Their Own) ceased to exist, there were no opportunities for girls to play organized ball because Little League was only for boys. Eleven-year-old Pepe’s attempt to play in the all-boys league ultimately resulted in a national campaign to pass what would become Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, guaranteeing women and girls equal educational opportunities, including sports.
