Worth Repeating: A Day in Radio – 1939

WORTH-REPEATING“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 10/4/11:

It should come as no surprise that EngAGE likes radio shows; our own Experience Talks radio show is on every Saturday morning. We appreciate the history of radio, too. In the days before television and back when going to the movies was a special treat, most of our EngAGE community residents and many of our blog readers relied on their radios as a daily source of news and entertainment. So we thought you’d enjoy a look back at what radio was like in 1939. If you were too young then to remember it now — or if you were not even born yet! – you’ll still find it fascinating.  Click here to listen to a full day of CBS radio affiliate WJSV in Washington, D.C., on September 21, 1939.

Thanks to writer, editor, artist and popular culture historian Bhob Stewart who provided these fascinating link through his blog, Potrzebie.

Connie Sawyer: Oldest Member of Motion Picture Academy

FILMSomehow this LA Times article, published when the Academy Awards were imminent, slipped by us, so we’re catching up:

“At 99, Connie Sawyer is one of the oldest members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences….Sawyer’s been in show business for more than eight decades — she began working in stand-up comedy in Depression-era New York at the age of 19, after a childhood spent in dance lessons and traveling with her mother to see performers like Fanny Brice in San Francisco…”

Ms. Sawyer will be 100 years old on November 27th. Read more here.
