News from The Piedmont

There was abundant holiday cheer at The Piedmont in December! The monthly birthday celebration was combined with the holiday dinner dance, the annual Arts & Crafts Fair shared senior-made work, and the seniors and students in the Country Day mentoring program for 5th graders made cinnamon holiday ornaments. All this plus the usual engaging programs, including a book club, art classes, computer coaching, gardening, exercising, and more!

News from Villa Anaheim

In addition to holiday celebrations, December at Villa Anaheim brought residents a rousing game of pictionary, a current affairs discussion group, a physical therapist who discussed the risks of falling and how to counter them, and lots of coupon clipping. The coupons are mailed by EngAGE staff several times a year for distribution to the dependants of military personnel living abroad. Classes in art, computer use, and exercise continue, along with food distribution programs, and more!

Drumming as Exercise

EXERCISEEngAGE community residents enjoy participating in drum circles because they’re an opportunity to be musically creative and to have fun. But drumming has become a popular exercise activity, too: “Drums Alive classes combine traditional aerobic movements with the powerful beat and rhythm of drums. Instead of beating on a drum, however, people whack a large exercise ball with a pair of drumsticks, unleashing their inner rock stars. The beauty of Drums Alive is that anyone can do it, regardless of age, fitness level or physical limitations, and drumming in a group fosters a sense of community, proponents say.” Read more on CNN Health here.

News from Casa Bonita

In addition to exercise classes, computer classes, ESL Bingo, social service advocacy, and more, in December, Casa Bonita residents enjoyed a visit from the entertaining Irish group, the Bealltine Players, who performed songs and stories. Also, the Altamed organization had a community table-top Flu Clinic in the Casa Bonita clubhouse for the residents. Between the hours of 9am-1pm, residents had the convenient opportunity to come down to the clubhouse and receive their flu shots. Altamed also shared medical information and resources with the residents and answered their medical questions.
