News from Metro@Hollywood: Yoga + Harvest Celebration

Residents at The Metro at Hollywood Senior Apartments in Los Angeles, CA, engage in gentle, but active aerobic movement to improve their strength, cardiovascular health, and general physical well-being.  Twice a week in the community gym, residents are taught yoga as a means of improving their balance, stretching ability, strength, and relaxation.

Residents  attended the Harvest Celebration where they also celebrated the November birthdays. Hosted by WSH Management and EngAGE, they enjoyed delicious food, light refreshments, and cake. Some residents also brought their favorite homemade side dishes and desserts. A gift card raffle was held, and dance music was provided by DJ Bang Bang.

News from Metro@Compton: The Beauty of Paying It Forward

In November, residents in the craft class at The Metro @ Compton Senior Apartments in Compton, CA, used their imaginations to do some good. They made crafts that benefited others via the Pay It Forward Foundation. Founded in 2000, Pay It Forward “serves as a catalyst to inspire growth for the Pay It Forward philosophy, acts of kindness among strangers, generating a ripple effect from one person to the next, one community to the next.” The residents created amazing handmade bracelets and journals. These lovely items, along with an inspirational handwritten note, will go to local women’s shelters. Paying it forward is a beautiful thing!

Research demonstrates that participating in arts activities improves the health and quality of life of older people.

MLK Day of Service: Make It a Day ON, Not a Day Off!

Click here to find volunteer opportunities for MLK Day and throughout the year.

Legislation signed in 1983 marked the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as a federal holiday. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as “a day ON, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

News from The Jasmine: Thankful

Residents of The Jasmine at Founders Village in Fountain Valley, CA, enjoyed many events with friends and neighbors during the month of November, including a birthday celebration, a Thanksgiving gathering, and new programming for the property.

The residents are thrilled to participate in the new program, ”Knitting for the Community,” for the next couple of months. Residents will have the opportunity to knit scarves, hats, and mittens, which will be donated back to the community.

WSH Management and EngAGE collaborated to provide a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, and residents added a touch of home by making their favorite side dishes for the event.

Birthday celebration!

Peggy is a Jasmine resident who turned 90 in November, and celebrated her birthday with friends and family. On her special day, she was crowned “Queen” by her daughters in Dana Point. She was excited to show her special birthday gifts to her friends and neighbors, so she wore her crown and sash to the Jasmine birthday celebration.

(from our 2004 Experience Talks archives)

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Broadway legend CAROL CHANNING. She left a legacy that includes her Tony Award-winning roles as Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! She was also the recipient of the 1995 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. She was nominated for an Academy Award, and won a Golden Globe for her performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2003, she released her best-selling memoir entitled, Just Lucky, I Guess, and she toured the world in her one woman show, The First 80 Years Are the Hardest. We were fortunate to have Carol Channing on Experience Talks for the first time in 2004. This week, we’ll listen again to that interview, with hosts Bobbee Zeno and Tim Carpenter.

Learn more about the Dr. Carol Channing & Harry Kullijian Foundation, a non-profit established in 2005 to bring awareness to the general public of the importance of arts education, to provide music instruments for underfunded public schools, and to provide scholarships for California State University students.
