News from Cascadian Terrace: Harvest Dinner

Much work and effort by staff and resident volunteers went into the fun, community Harvest Dinner in November at Cascadian Terrace in Portland, OR.  Residents worked in the community room the whole day, or just hung out there in order to participate in the festive atmosphere.  The meal was healthy and delicious, with a selection of squashes as ingredients in dishes. The menu included chicken and vegetarian mini-pot pies with acorn squash, a delicata squash spinach salad, macaroni and cheese, and a delicious pumpkin cake for dessert. Residents also enjoyed mulled cider and eggnog.

Offering a free meal not only boosts morale but it also helps people stretch a dollar in tangible ways. One resident stopped by early in the day, thanking us for the meal because residents sometimes financially struggle towards the end of the month. Even with a fixed income, residents were quick to contribute to the meal, including a key lime pie and ingredients for macaroni and cheese.

One of the primary volunteers is a former cook and he made the large pot of delicious baked macaroni and cheese, using readily accessible ingredients from our dry goods pantry and donated items from my house and resident homes. Afterwards he noted, “Doing these kinds of big meals is like therapy for me. I really enjoy helping out. It feels good. Thanks!”  Several of the residents who were in the middle of temporarily moving out for a building-wide renovation project came specifically to the dinner despite the added stress of packing and moving between Cascadian Terrace and their hotel.  They timed their trips in order to overlap with the timing of the Harvest Dinner. This is a powerful testimony to how these meals weave together community.

News from Cantabria & Asturias: Jewelry Class

Michelle Yu’s jewelry class at Cantabria and Asturias Senior Apartments in Panorama City, CA, had a noble aspiration for the month of December. They made and delivered jewelry for the cancer patients at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA. Here, the ladies are showing off the necklaces and bracelets they created. Truly beautiful items. They could open a shop!

News from NoHo SAC: Improv Showcase

Nine performers from the North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony in North Hollywood, CA, “brought the house down” with their hilarious improv skills at a recent performance. In front of a large audience, the performers showed everyone what they had learned in their eight week Improv Workshop with veteran teacher and improvisational performer, Raphael Margolin. Taking suggestions from the audience, the performers created a host of wacky characters and situations, right on the spot. Learning about improv involves many different games and exercises. An audience favorite involved creating a radio station, complete with music, ads, and announcements based on themes suggested by the audience. Improvisation is a fantastic exercise in “letting go” and tearing down those censors that stand in the way of creativity.

Group shot of the troupe of nine hilarious and creative performers.

The audience loved throwing out suggestions for the performers.

Each performer created a fictional radio station, right on the spot.

The performers shared games and exercises they had worked on in class.

News from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: A Fond Send-off for Barbara Fay

Barbara Fay was one of first residents to move into the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony in Long Beach, CA, when the building first opened in November of 2012. She shared her dreams of starting a theatrical troupe and of creating a monthly newsletter for the residents. Barbara’s dreams soon became reality when she formed the Reader’s Theatre program, where she directed a troupe of ten members in over 25 productions over the past six years.

She also wrote a column for our monthly newsletter, “The Source,” which highlighted news, advice, stories, and insights. In addition, Barbara often advocated on behalf of our residents and became the go-to source for senior resources. At our EngAGE meeting, several residents surprised her with a loving tribute of poems, songs, and memories. Outspoken, witty, and smart, she will be missed as she moves on to a new residence a few miles away.

The Reader’s Theatre company members performed a farewell tribute to their director, Barbara Fay.

With tears, cheers, hugs, and heartfelt gratitude, Barbara was overwhelmed with the accolades from her friends. We wish Barbara the very best as she starts a new adventure and she will always have a seat at our table at LBSAC!

EMIKO SUGIYAMA is originally from Tokyo, Japan, where she trained in classical ballet. She moved to the United States to study Physical Therapy at the University of California, Davis, in 1999. There she was
introduced to Hip Hop dance, which became her communication tool because she was struggling to express herself in English. When she saw “Rome and Jewels” by Rennie Harris Puremovement in 2000 at UC Davis,
despite her parents’ disagreement, she changed her major to Dance. Emiko had moved to the United States by following her heart, and Dance became the center of her life.

Emiko has performed with numerous dance companies such as Illstyle and Peace Productions, Jelom Bel, One Step Ahead, Antics Performance, Montaz Performing Art Company, and Rennie Harris Puremovement, and in countless festivals all across the United States and internationally (Japan, Poland, Russia, England, France, Canada, and Liberia). She has been invited to teach, compete, and judge competitions all over the world as well. She was featured as the cover girl for We B*girls, a hardcover book by world renowned photojournalist Martha Cooper, documenting extraordinary women in Hip-Hop. Emiko also has extensive  experience producing events, festivals, and programs, including The Annual J.U.i.C.E Hip Hop Dance Festival at Ford Amphitheatre; the “Bgirl Challenge,” a ten week intensive breakdance training session geared toward boosting the confidence and skills of emerging female dancers; and “Hip Hop Island,” a youth summer camp which introduces at-risk youth to the positive artistic elements of the Hip Hop culture. In 2012, Emiko received The Most Influential Female Hip Hop Contributor from the world famous dance crew, LA Breakers, and the Community Leadership Appreciation Award by the Lester Horton Dance Awards in 2016.

Through Emiko’s dance career, she has lived in various cities in the U.S., including Davis, Sacramento, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia. After she had experienced both East and West coasts, she decided to settle and married in Los Angeles in 2008. In 2009, Emiko and her friends founded Open House which is a weekly dance session where people share the love of House music and dance. Today, Open House has about 2,000 active community members in Los Angeles. Open House is Emiko’s family, and other members provide great support while Emiko is taking care of her son who is two years and eight months old.

Emiko is not only a performer but also an educator, choreographer, producer, artistic director, community builder, mother, and more. Emiko aspires to share not only her skills and abilities, but also her individuality and personality through dance, music, arts, and culture.

Originally from WA State, BEN EVANS settled in Los Angeles after a decade living abroad. Following a B.A. in Theater Studies from Yale University, he lived in London, Barcelona and Paris, where he earned an M.A. in Theater and Choreography from the University of Paris 8. His work as a choreographer and performer toured across Europe and parts of North and South America, and his more recent work in visual art has been shown in France, Germany, Brazil and Cyprus. He grew up with a strong sense of service and his move to Los Angeles was inspired by a desire to make an impact on a local level. He is elated to work with the residents at ACE/121 in Glendale in creating an innovative model of multi-generational living, art making, and community development.
