Residents at The Metro at Compton Senior Apartments are grateful for the monthly Food Forward program. Food Forward staff and volunteers rescue over 375,000 pounds of surplus produce each week from fruit trees, farmers markets and the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. All of these fresh fruits and vegetables are donated to various programs, including EngAGE. ~ Nutrition and health education programs are provided with support from our partner, SCAN Health Plan.
The Garden Club meets once a month to discuss garden issues and needs. Residents then go out to the garden to water it and clean it up. Let’s flash back to a late summer harvest!
Computer/Tech Class offers a friendly atmosphere in which residents can bring their computers, tablets, and cell phones to receive help operating them.

Residents at the Burbank Senior Artists Colony in Burbank, CA, had a fabulous time at our annual Halloween party. The Hard Water Band performed classics from the ’60s and ’70s while residents enjoyed turkey chili, cornbread, pumpkin pie, and drinks. The band played an extra long set for all the dancers cutting a rug all night.
Residents at Cotton’s Point Senior Apartments in San Clemente, CA, enjoy craft time twice a month with Program Director, Jennifer Fallon. They paint rocks, creating beautiful art work, then hide the rocks in the community. Finders post their discoveries on the San Clemente Rocks Facebook page. San Clemente Rocks is “a free social club that paints and hides rocks in San Clemente, CA, for others to find and enjoy. ‘Keep, share, or rehide’ is our motto. This is a creative way to spread artistic love throughout our community. We use this club as a way to raise money for local charity.” There are currently 4,595 in the Facebook group, so there must be a lot of beautifully painted rocks scattered about for lucky residents and visitors to find!
Residents Barbra Morrow and Helen Luhah enjoyed painting their rocks with acrylic paints. They hid them somewhere on Del Mar Street!

L.A. Kitchen had a motto: “Neither Food Nor People Should Ever Go To Waste.” That belief led to their three clearly defined goals:
1. Reclaim healthy, local food that would otherwise go to waste.
2. Provide culinary job training to unemployed men and women.
3. Distribute fresh, nutritious meals to fellow Angelenos.
Unfortunately, L.A. Kitchen closed on November 1st because it could not continue to fund its programs. You can read founder Robert Egger’s farewell email here and watch the video about L.A. Kitchen’s journey. EngAGE CEO/Founder Tim Carpenter commented, “I am greatly saddened by the loss of L.A. Kitchen. Such a great place, great idea, and run by a great man, my friend Robert Egger. A big loss for our city.”
L.A. Kitchen’s Empower L.A. culinary school admitted 22 new students every 14 weeks. All of the participants had either been incarcerated, homeless, or had aged out of foster care. The school provided not only valuable job training, but also personal counseling and a nurturing place in which the students could grow. Learn more here.
L.A. Kitchen took cosmetically imperfect fruits and veggies that were donated by farms, wholesale businesses, and local gardens and used them not only to train their new chefs, but to provide healthy meals to the community. Many of our EngAGE community residents benefited from this program which included not only a sample healthy meal, but also instruction in how to cook it and a bag of groceries to make that possible. Here’s an example of one of their visits to the Metro at Compton Senior Apartments in Compton, CA.
We wish Robert Egger the best and know that we’ll see him again somewhere, engaged in continuing, determined efforts to make sure that neither food nor people go to waste.
