News from The Grove: Art Class

Residents in the art class at The Grove Senior Apartment in Garden Grove, CA,  spent time on a paint and sip painting that Program Director and art teacher Lourdes Torres taught as a transition piece. She comments, “I thought it would be a quick one for us but it lasted a couple of classes. This painting offered a few lessons that the students took their time on. The first lesson was sketching in white paint to lay out their composition over their background. They had to overcome their anxiety about drawing a mistake and how to cover it up. They also learned about the curvature of the lines on the balloon to make it appear that the balloon has a round shape, starting narrow at the top then widening as it followed the curvature of the balloon and then narrowing again at the base of the balloon. They also learned about proportion, starting with the basket and then drawing the correct proportion for the balloon to appear realistic as well as fit within their canvas. They did a great job!”

News from The Jasmine: Art Class

In the art classes at The Jasmine at Founders Village, participants started learning about and appreciating art history. The focus was the Impressionist art movement. Art instructor and Program Director Lourdes Torres reports: “We learned about the prominent artists of the time and the techniques they used. In this time, artists were stepping away from traditional art techniques and starting to do things differently. This new way was not well received at first, but Impressionism has come to be the most popular art movement to date. The artists moved outside (“en plein air”) to capture natural settings. They used short brush strokes of overlapping colors, and created depth and light without an obvious light source. They often painted ordinary places or figures, and they used directional lines and brushstrokes that lead the viewer to figure out the surfaces and textures. This lesson was the first step in creating our own Impressionist-inspired paintings in the classes to follow.”

News from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: Community Cup

Helene Weinberg, LBSAC Program Director, reports: Imagine the excitement of our LBSAC team, being the first to win the 2017 EngAGE Community Cup last year.  Our 2018 team members were all smiles as they gathered in the LBSAC lobby before boarding the bus to Cerritos Park. Their team T-Shirts were beautifully decorated, the artists brought their work for the Art competition, and Lucia had practiced her song performance. It was clear that they wanted to hold on to that trophy again this year, yet they were happy for Portofino Villas who captured the 2018 Community Cup prize. Well done!

We are so proud of team LBSAC, who took home medals in the walking races, basketball hoops, and performance competitions!

It is a joy and an honor to emcee this annual event. It’s the best day of the year for me as I witness our EngAGE communities take the field and play their hearts out in the park. Even more fun is watching them mingle and dance all together, adorned in their beautifully decorated T-Shirts and their award-winning smiles!

Take a look at the video Helene made of the big day and see LBSAC photos below!

JONATHAN SCHOOLER, PhD
DENICE THOMAN
Host: DR. CONNIE CORLEY

DR. JONATHAN SCHOOLER is a Professor and principal investigator of the META lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on consciousness, creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making. On the META lab, Dr. Schooler notes: “My lab’s research takes a ‘big picture’ perspective in attempting to understand the nature of mental life and, in particular, consciousness. Combining empirical, philosophical, and contemplative traditions, we address broad questions that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Some of the topics and associated questions that intrigue us include: Mind-wandering: How does the stream of consciousness flow between the external world and internal thoughts and feelings? Mindfulness: Are there ways of enhancing our capacity to remain focused in the present moment? Creativity: What processes contribute to creative discoveries, and how can we enhance them? We are also interested in broader issues and associated questions regarding the frontiers of science.”

Dr. Schooler’s work has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Unilever Corporation, the Center for Consciousness Studies, the Office of Educational Research, the Bower Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the John Templeton Foundation, the Imagination Institute, and the Fetzer Franklin Fund.
