Thomas J. Long Foundation Awards $400,000 Grant to EngAGE
The Thomas J. Long Foundation has awarded $400,000 to EngAGE for the EngAGE Replication Project in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. This project allows the expansion of the nationally renowned, award-winning EngAGE model to Northern California. In the program’s first year, approximately 250 seniors residing in affordable senior housing will participate in EngAGE programming, and the organization will work with real estate development partners to create affordable senior housing that supports the health and wellness of future residents. In response to the generous grant, EngAGE CEO/Founder Tim Carpenter commented, “We are so happy to be part of the Thomas J. Long Foundation family to expand our work in Northern California, and are so thankful to partner with Mark Friedman and Nancy Shillis there. It also allows us to hire the amazing Laura Mason to be our Executive Director of Northern California. Such gratitude for that opportunity.”
News from Metro@Hollywood: Whole Person Approach to Creative Living
From art classes to ESL to yoga to community building celebrations, The Metro at Hollywood Senior Apartments in Los Angeles, CA, demonstrates the EngAGE whole person approach to creative living.
Art Class gives residents the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Each month, instructor Polet Zargarian wants residents to continue working on their paintings and learning “to see.” This month, she wanted them to see how depth is created by using values of color in the foreground, middle ground, and background, and in details.
ESL Class gives residents an opportunity to practice their English language skills. This month, they learned more about pronunciation as well as the function and use of prepositions. Practicing general conversational dialogues is also very useful.
Yoga class meets twice a month to stretch out their muscles.
EngAGE and WSH Management collaborate to bring residents a nice monthly birthday celebration. They share a delicious cake, light refreshments, raffle prizes, and a great sense of community.
EngAGE embraces a whole-person approach to creative living, providing college-level programs in the arts, wellness, and lifelong learning.

News from LBSAC: Loyola Marymount U. Educates about Composting
Coming soon to Long Beach Senior Arts Colony in Long Beach, CA: composting!
We are pleased that Lezlee Matthews, Ph.D., Director of Community Based Learning at Loyola Marymount University, has let us know that a CACC-CESF* fellow will develop leadership skills by building upon the collaboration begun during Spring 2018 with another department, Green LMU, to plan the composting project at Long Beach Senior Arts Colony. Residents will receive free composting bins, get educated about composting, and begin to practice composting. The Community-Based Learning (CBL) program will support the project and appeal to CBL students and faculty to work with the LBSAC residents or participate in an immersion experience in the field to learn more about the project. Primary funding for the composting bins has been pledged by Green LMU.
Uma Nicole, Certified Master Gardener who advises the gardening group at LBSAC; Helene Weinberg, LBSAC Program Director; and Nancy Goodhart, EngAGE COO, facilitated this community partnership project with LMU.
