Resident Spotlight

From Tanya Kutukdjian, Program Assistant: This month we got to see a resident really shine on the dance floor. Gloria had participated in the Senior Olympics a few years ago, but had not been heavily involved in any activities or events until recently. She happened to be passing through the community room a few months ago and we had a chance to catch up. Another resident encouraged her to participate in the bingo game that was about
to take place, and she agreed. She has been joining the bingo group weekly ever since then.
Gloria has taken this as an opportunity to learn a new language. She shows up with a notepad and writes down (phonetically) all the numbers and any words that she hears in Armenian. She is very excited to be learning a new language, especially one that many of
her fellow residents speak! She has already learned many numbers and words and proudly uses them during our games.

Aside from Bingo, Gloria has been participating in our music and dance events. She loves to dance and admitted that she hadn’t danced in a while. She said it felt so good to be able to dance and enjoy music. Gloria also occasionally brings her adorable granddaughters to
participate in bingo games and special events. It is wonderful to see Gloria being so active and happy with her fellow residents and her grandchildren.~ Elizabeth Sampson, Program Director

News from La Coruña: Knitting

The knitting group at La Coruña in Van Nuys, CA, is small but devoted.  They make beautiful things, but more importantly, they continue to learn new stitches and patterns with their instructor, Craig. Some things are straightforward and simple like the scarves made this last month.

News from Cantabria/Asturias: Art + Jewelry + Yoga

At Cantabria Senior Apartments and Asturias Senior Apartments in Panorama City, CA, the Art Class continues to exceed expectations. The residents are not only fully committed to their enjoyment of the process, but the art itself continues to astound and amaze. They are truly expressing themselves, and what they make is a testament to their freedom of expression and their expanding skill sets. Just look:

EngAGE, Inc.

You can tell by the expression, how important the work is. I once had a teacher who defined fun as “that which engages you fully” – I would say these students are having fun.

Another form of creative energy is given to the Jewelry Making Class with Michelle Yu. Michelle specializes in organic shapes, and allowing the student to use materials and colors that speak to them.

This is Pamela Roylane’s Yoga Class having a small gathering for a snack after class. These are the ladies who come week after week, and who have transformed their bodies and ignited their spirits through yoga.

News from Park Plaza: Resident Spotlight + Timeslips Stortelling

EngAGE, Inc.From Program Assistant Tanya Kutukdjian at Park Plaza Senior Apartments in North Hollywood, CA:

This month’s spotlight is on Khachik. He is one of Park Plaza’s talented singers. When I first met Khachik, he had recently lost his wife and was understandably in a sad place in his life. He was always very kind, but also very sad. He would attend the song and dance events, sitting in a corner with a few of the other gentlemen. He would just sit quietly and listen to the music — his love for music was evident in his eyes. Finally, one of his friends let me in on the secret: Khachik loved to sing! I asked him if he would perform a song for us, and with a little cheering on from his friends, he agreed. The rest is history.  Khachik not only began singing, but would also accompany the women in dancing.  Now, he will never refuse an offer to dance.

EngAGE, Inc.He also began participating in the Senior Olympics, in the athletic as well as talent arena.

Through the opportunities provided by Engage at Park Plaza, he was able to have much to look forward to and to be proud of, giving him purpose after he felt there was none left.

Now, Khachik is always a guest singer at the events we hold. Everyone knows that he will give them at least two beautiful trips down memory lane with his selection of songs. There is no doubt Khachik will always feel the void from the loss of his wife, however, he has found joy through his performances.

From Sarah Jacobus with Timeslips:

We had a wild storytelling session at Park Plaza in April—eight women, the largest group yet, two of whom were newbies—and a story that turned racy and elicited raucous laughter and so much back and forth that even Tanya was having a hard time keeping up with translation. One of the participants gestured around the group and told me, “See? We’re all happy!” Several women commented after that the session had been “refreshing” and “therapeutic.”

ERNIE DE SILVA
with host JOHN SEMPER JR.

See Ernie’s new show, Smoke, Saturday, June 23rd! Scroll down for details.

ERNIE DE SILVA  is a product of Bushwick projects in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up the youngest of 13 siblings; he’s hardly typical in any sense of the word. His creative career started at the age of 12 when one day while break dancing in the streets, he and his crew, Love Disco Style, were discovered by radio station 98.7 KISS FM where Eddie Rivera chose them to be the station’s resident dancers. It was there Ernie got his first tastes of life in front of live audiences as they immediately began performing all across the city in shows with some of street music’s hottest acts. As Ernie grew, so did his taste for performing, but now with a more eclectic edge.

He became fascinated with performers like Flip Wilson, Freddie Prinze, and Richard Pryor. At age 17, stand-up became his new voice at places like the upper west side’s Stand Up New York, The Comic Strip in the Upper East Side, and the Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village. While he enjoyed the exhilarating feeling that came with being a stand-up, eventually his musical side called to be recognized.

The voices of people like Andres Segovia, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia, Son House, and Jimi Hendrix began to join all the other voices he loved. They also began intriguing Ernie to mimic them as much as he could. He embarked on his tutelage in guitar styles which ranged from classical to blues, most of which he taught himself while sleeping on odd couches, spending random nights at youth hostels and homeless shelters, and even a few nights riding freight trains around the country.

All these exploits and years of traveling, playing guitar, his innate abilities for both dramatic acting and doing comedy in stand-up and sketch comedy forms first earned him a Bachelor’s Degree in Acting from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and eventually the amazing honor of being bestowed a full scholarship to the newest Graduate Acting Program at the University of Southern California. In fact, after a worldwide search conducted by the school of over 360 applicants, he was given the only full scholarship awarded that year to a class only housing ten students.

Ultimately stand-up comedy’s voice eventually began to feel too limiting an art form. It was then that the world of one man shows moved into his sights. It was in this realm that Ernie would find the creative room for all of his individual abilities to coincide in harmony in whatever capacities he chose. There is where he has been ever since.

See a teaser here for Ernie’s first one man show, Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame.
