The language of the heart (love and signs) is what counts!”

The Yoga and Meditation class brings harmony to mind, body, and spirit. The sitting exercises are focused on stretching muscles and joints to release body tension, followed by 10 minutes of meditation to achieve relaxation and calmness.

News from Pac Arts: Regina Argentin Show Closing June 7th

Novel Concepts – Closing June 7th

This compelling show by Pac Arts resident Regina Argentin represents a new body of narrative paintings illustrating three film noir style, dystopian graphic novels she created. The intention was to create paintings that serve as illustrations but also stand on their own, in addition to the charcoal drawings that accompany the books. The pieces represent moments and sometimes overlapping images of novel highlights.

About the artist: Regina Argentin received her BFA at Art Center College in Pasadena. Upon graduation, she moved to NYC to pursue her passion as a professional fine artist. She participated in solo and group shows, and won several fellowship residencies.  She then returned to her native city of Los Angeles to work in the film industry as an art director. She continues to make fine art, exhibit, teach, and has also established her own fine and decorative art business.

She creates large abstract oil paintings on canvas with some representational qualities with ethereal themes.

Selected collectors: Lee Iacocca, F. Lee Bailey, Liz and Allan Johnson, Phil Everly, Jean Pierre Jeunet, Beverly Cohen, Carol Little, Neil Diamond, Citibank, Machinehead, Lord Montague

This event is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and by the California Arts Council.

Memorial Day

On the first Decoration Day at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868, General James Garfield made a speech after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. The celebration was inspired by local observances that had taken place in various locations in the three years since the end of the Civil War.

By the late 19th century, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate what is now called Memorial Day, and after World War I, observers began to honor the dead of all of America’s wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.

You’re likely to see red poppies being sold and worn on this day, a tradition inspired by the poem, In Flander’s Field, written by Lt. Colonel John McCrae in 1915. Red poppies are a symbol of the fallen military. Learn more about the significance of the poppies here.

The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.”

News from The Grove: Art and Gardening

At The Grove Senior Apartments in Garden Grove, CA, the art class started painting with acrylic paint on larger canvas to challenge the imagination and design a composition that uses more space. Participants chose an object — real or made up — and used an enlarged perspective that filled the canvas (and went off the edges) in an interesting way. They considered how positive and negative shapes should play into the composition, and for added dimension, they broke up the composition with lines that continue throughout the space to give interest to any areas that were bare due to enlargement. The class drew inspiration from each other and everyone did a great job!

Grove in residents enjoyed a beautiful, sunshiny day in the garden. They harvested their lettuce crop and prepared the beds to plant again for the season.

News from ACE/121: “Queer” Multi-Venue Event

QUEER is a multi-venue event in Glendale, California.

Opening reception: June 8, 2018 – 6:00-9:00 pm

QUEER is being presented at the following venues:

ace/121 Gallery
121 N. Kenwood St, Glendale, CA 91206

“A word becomes a slur becomes a culture. For some, Queer remains too painful to embrace. For others, it’s a culture that extends beyond the LGBT community, allowing for broader inclusiveness. In LGBT normative Century 21, what is Queer anymore? “

This show was an open call invitation to submit one piece, one paragraph:  What makes you QUEER?

ALSO: On June 28 from 7:30 – 9:00 pm, ace/121 and Homo-Centric will present an evening of readings revolving around the paragraphs that examine the evolution of a word and how LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ alike identify with it today.

Abril Books/Roslin Art Gallery
415 E Broadway, Glendale, CA 91205

GALAS (Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society), Abril Books, and Roslin Art Gallery are presenting QUEER in both gallery work and a month of programming.

“Experiences of queerness and otherness have been shared by the Armenian and LGBTQIA+ community.  Both have been targeted and oppressed throughout history in different contexts.  In a diverse city such as Los Angeles, the experience of being queer or other is constantly evolving. This is a call to all artists of Armenian backgrounds, whether or not you identify as LGBTQIA+, to submit artwork that expresses your experience of queerness or otherness.”

Additionally, Abril Books has about half a dozen related events programmed for the month of June.

Gauchos Village – AFTERPARTY!
135 N Maryland Ave, Glendale, CA 91206

Gauchos Village is a Brazilian steak house and bar that is a gay-owned and gay-friendly venue for all LGBTQ events.  They are hosting the after-party and providing free nibbles.

All three venues are within walking distance of each other and this will be a very easy artwalk in DTGlendale. Glendale has a broad but mostly invisible and therefore unacknowledged LGBTQ community. QUEER is an endeavor to not only look at the evolution of a word and a culture, but to do so in what will be Glendale’s first ever LGBTQ-based art exhibit and Gay Pride Event. This is a very big night for Glendale, its LGBTQ residents, and everyone who lives with the sense of Other.

QUEER is made possible through the support of the Eisner Foundation and the California Arts Council. It is produced by ace/121 Gallery, Abril Books/Roslin Art Gallery, Gauchos Village, EngAGE and GALAS.

News from Cascadian Terrace: Creative Cooking

This spring, Cascadian Terrace Apartments in Portland, OR, invited two local cooking professionals to share ideas for healthy creative meals on a budget. Each teacher was offered a four week sequence, and recipes were uniquely designed based on the offerings in the monthly food boxes some residents receive, combined with fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a popular and lively class with students sharing a meal that they prepare together. A particular favorite was homemade bread with potato leek soup!
