News from BSAC: Acting and Exercise

In Burbank, CA, the Burbank Senior Artists Colony Acting Class had their culminating event in April. Students performed short scenes and monologues, both comedic and dramatic, directed by our Acting Coach, Valerie Gould. We had a great turn out with friends and family in attendance. Our actors were met with big laughs and applause. They are already planning their next performance!

The Chair Volleyball Club has inducted some new members and they continue to have a great time with Lydia, our Burbank High Volunteer!

News from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: Savvy Saving Seniors

In May, residents at LBSAC in Long Beach, CA, learned h0w to become savvy about saving money as Lori Watrous from Credit.org presented an informative workshop. Participants were each given a handbook with saving tips, resources and a handy budget template. With everyday expenses rising such as rent, medications, transportation, and food, the residents were grateful to learn how to save extra money each month and to take full advantage of the benefits they are entitled to.

News from Park Plaza: TimeSlips Storytelling Resident Spotlight

Tanya Kutukdjian, Programs Assistant, sent in this Resident Spotlight report:

March was a good month at Park Plaza Senior Apartments in North Hollywood, CA, as we welcomed new residents to both Bingo and TimeSlips.

With Bingo, we have two new residents that have moved from the sidelines into the actual game! Both of these residents would always be sitting nearby and observing during Bingo, but never joined in the games. Sometimes it takes courage to decide to participate.

With TimeSlips, we are continuing to see things progress beautifully. Residents now ask when the next group is going to meet, and many participate enthusiastically without needing encouragement or coaxing. Once they start, it is clear how much they enjoy the group and how proud they feel to contribute to the wonderful stories that are created.
One of our greatest achievements is getting the participation of one of our male residents, which has been rare at this site.

Mr. Artash (pictured here with instructor Sarah Jacobus) has become a regular. Even though he has medical issues that prevent him from participating consistently, he is always willing to share a story and contribute something each time we meet. Sometimes he is just returning from medical treatment when we are having our group, but he will make it a point to stop by and check in with us, sharing some type of story, which is healing for us all.

TimeSlips opens storytelling to everyone by replacing the pressure to remember with the freedom to imagine.

News from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: Spring Fling

Tania, one of our Metro tour guides shares a smile with LBSAC resident, Martha Aguilar.

At LBSAC, in Long Beach, CA, our “Spring Flings” included a free trip and tour of Union Station, courtesy of LA Metro. On a beautiful Spring morning, 25 residents walked over to the nearby Anaheim Station and were treated to a trip and tour. They learned about the Metro system and enjoyed exploring the points of interest along the way. Many thanks to LA Metro for a wonderful event!

At right, Martha snapped a photo of herself and the statue which shares her last name.
