Many articles have been published about “elder orphans” – people who are aging alone – which includes a large segment of our population. The AARP article, “How to Plan for Aging without a Family Caregiver,” addresses the primary issues faced by people in that situation. Here’s a recent article from the NY Times offering practical information and here’s one from Psychology Today in which the author states that the term, “elder orphan,” is not only stigmatizing and ageist, it also doesn’t take into account that many older people are quite content to be aging alone.
If you are on Facebook, there are groups that offer support and information for solo agers (perhaps a better term). They all stress privacy and security, offering “a SAFE and stress-free place to come and relax and make new friends.” Here are a few examples:
Elder Orphans – The group is restricted to individuals over 55 who live without the help of a spouse, partner, and children. If you feel you’re aging alone, with little support, you belong.
Aging Alone – This group is a place for individuals to seek and offer support regarding growing older in our society and sometimes finding the path bumpy or lonely.
Women Over 60s Friendship Group – “This LADIES CLOSED friendly group is a group for those who are coming up to 60 (59 plus) and those fortunate to be 60 or over. :))” Affiliated with Over50shub.com: “A GLOBAL friendship networking site for over 50’s, where you can come and MAKE FRIENDS in your local area and chat via Blogs/Groups/Messenger/Forums, we have just started meetups too.”
