News from Metro Chinatown: Creativity and Cake

At the Metro at Chinatown Senior Lofts in Los Angeles, CA, crafty residents made a sunburst mirror out of cardboard and plastic spoons. First they cut the spoon tops and then hot glued them around the cardboard in a circular pattern. To finish the project, they spray-painted the spoons with a color of their choice, then placed the mirror in the center. They were so proud of their work!

At the monthly birthday celebration provided by the EngAGE/WSH Management collaboration, residents were able to enjoy delicious food, including cake. They also enjoyed raffle prizes provided by EngAGE.

Experience Talks Online: George Takei – Parts One and Two Posted Now

Experience Talks Radio Show & Podcasts

The Experience Talks radio show is preempted on Sunday, 3/25, for a special day of KPFK bi-lingual programming, so we’re providing Part Two of our interview as a podcast. Please go to our Experience Talks website to listen to both parts now.

GEORGE TAKEI
ALLEGIANCE
with host JOHN SEMPER JR.

a two-part interview

Stage and screen star GEORGE TAKEI is well known for his founding role as “Mr. Sulu” in the acclaimed television series, Star Trek, and as an influential social media icon, but the creative effort closest to his heart is the Broadway musical, Allegiance.  This powerful play was inspired by his own family’s harrowing experiences during World War II when 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced to abandon their homes and all of their possessions, and were incarcerated in camps simply because they were of Japanese descent. Takei, who was born in Boyle Heights, spent his childhood in the Rohwer Incarceration Camp in Arkansas and, later, at Tule Lake in Northern California.

With music and lyrics by Jay Kuo and a book by Marc Acito, Jay Kuo, and Lorenzo Thione, Allegiance tells the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended following the events of Pearl Harbor. Sam Kimura seeks to prove his patriotism by fighting for his country in the war, but his sister, Kei, fiercely protests the government’s treatment of her people. An uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit, Allegiance follows the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves. In the musical, Mr. Takei plays the pivotal roles of “Sam Kimura” and “Ojii-Chan” that he originated on Broadway.

Join host John Semper Jr. as he talks with George Takei about his experiences in the camps, the enduring effect they had on his adult life, and, ultimately, how they led to the creation of Allegiance.

News from Magnolia@Highland: Jewelry Boxes

At Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments in San Bernardino, Program Director Alma is also an instructor: My Artists’ Round Table is close to finishing their jewelry boxes. They are excited about how well they are turning out. I think they have once again impressed each other with their abilities. In the beginning, they all said this would be a project they would keep for themselves, and as the weeks went by almost each one of them was thinking about giving it as a gift to their daughter or granddaughter. I told them it must be the mother in all of them. Always thinking of their kids first!

News from Cantabria/Asturias: Jewelry Workshop

Michelle Yu continues her Jewelry Workshop with the ladies and gentlemen at Cantabria/Asturias Senior Apartments in Panorama City, CA. Fred Ruggiero (in the baseball cap) has made jewelry all of his life. He makes beautiful pieces and yet still enjoys learning new skills and having some fun with Michelle. It was Fred’s suggestion to have a jewelry class, and also his suggestion to make Halloween masks this last October in the Art Class. A very creative fellow.

Michelle specializes in organic shapes and materials. They really enjoyed making bracelets together and proudly modeled their baubles and charms for the teacher and each other.

They truly make some beautiful jewelry in this class, suitable for wearing and/or gift giving.
