News from Magnolia @ 9th: Crafting for the Community Cup

The Craft Class at Magnolia@9th in San Bernadino, CA,  is gearing up for the EngAGE Community Cup (formerly the EngAGE Senior Olympics). Residents are attending the class with extra enthusiasm and dedication because they have been working on the project they will present at the event on September 16th. The spirit of competition drives them: they won the Art trophy last year and now they are getting ready to win again!  They are putting in their best effort to work as a team and use their abilities to complete the project successfully. What’s the project? Well, they’re not revealing the details until the Community Cup exhibit!

News from Burbank Senior Artists Colony: Healthy Cooking

Program Director Megan Hocking showed residents how to use items from the Community Garden in healthy recipes. They made a Greek Turkey Meatloaf, Greek Cucumber Salad, and a Lemon Yogurt Sauce.  Residents got to taste the finished product, take some meatloaf home to freeze, and take the recipe to make on their own at home. Below are some of the residents enjoying seconds after the class was completed.

SABRA WILLIAMS & CHRIS BINGLEY
THE ACTORS’ GANG PRISON PROJECT
Host: TIM CARPENTER

Chris Bingley and Sabra Williams

Eleven years ago, SABRA WILLIAMS, an actress at The Actors’ Gang, approached the company’s Artistic Director, Tim Robbins, about starting a prison program. And The Prison Project was born at the California Institution for Men in Chino.

The Actors Gang Prison Project now conducts weekly and seven-day-intensive workshops in eight California prisons, as well as Juvenile and Reentry programs.  In each workshop, 20-25 inmate participants work with Actors’ Gang teaching artists with the goal to unlock human potential.

In class with Tim Robbins

Also on the show is CHRIS BINGLEY, a participant in the Prison Project when he was incarcerated at the California Institute of Men. Chris now serves as a teaching artist for the Actors’ Gang and works at The Anti-Recidivism Coalition. Listen in as Tim Carpenter talks to Sabra Williams and Chris Bingley of The Actors’ Gang Prison Project about crime, punishment, and what might set us free.

Your Health: High Blood Pressure

We were recently contacted by a reader named Sally, a former nutritionist and gym instructor who now works as the content manager for a senior care site. She was writing because her mother has always had a problem with her blood pressure, which got worse as she got older, worrying her and her doctors. Sally reports, “Together we devised a simple diet and exercise routine which helped lower it. Basic cardio, simply from going on walks around the neighborhood, has really improved her blood pressure and overall health.”

Here’s the link to the informative article Sally helped prepare, explaining what is known about the causes of high blood pressure and what you can do to lower it or help avoid it.
