EngAGE Launches Programs in Portland, Oregon!

Tim Carpenter - Founder & Executive DirectorExciting news from Tim Carpenter, Founder and Executive Director of EngAGE:

I am pleased to announce that EngAGE has begun program delivery in Portland!

Cascadian Terrace - Portland

Our first community, Cascadian Terrace Apartments, is a 103-unit subsidized property providing affordable housing for very low income residents.

Please join us from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, September 9, for this kick-off of EngAGE programming in Portland at Cascadian Terrace Apartments, 5700 North Kerby. Come and meet the residents of the community and enjoy a BBQ together with live music at 4:30 provided by popular Portland singer/songwriter Tyler Stenson!

At Cascadian Terrace, EngAGE is inaugurating an association with Friendly House to deliver arts-based programs. This is also the first collaboration of EngAGE with another group expanding to Portland and Oregon, Community Development Partners, the owners of Cascadian Terrace and other Portland properties, including the vintage Rexall Building on NE Alberta Street. We expect to continue our association with Friendly House as the expansion of EngAGE continues in Portland, and with Community Development Partners in California and the Pacific Northwest in the coming months and years.

Tim Carpenter to Give Keynote at Arts in Eldercare Seminar in Singapore

arts-in-eldercare-seminar-2016Tim Carpenter, EngAGE Founder and Executive Director, has been invited by the National Arts Council of Singapore to give the keynote address at the Arts in Eldercare Seminar 2016 to be held on September 1st and 2nd in Singapore.

In addition to giving the keynote talk about bringing arts to senior communities, and the role of artists and their practice, Tim will also be discussing case studies of aging-in-place, facilitating a training session for artists, as well as meeting with leaders of various community arts organizations. This will be an exceptional international opportunity to share the EngAGE approach to creative aging.

The National Arts Council is Singapore’s national body for developing the Arts and is a statutory board under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The Arts in Eldercare Seminar is an annual platform bringing together social and healthcare practitioners, aged care policymakers, and artists, to explore how the arts can engage and empower the elderly for creative aging.

NAC has also initiated the Silver Arts Festival, an annual month-long national platform in September that advocates the meaningful possibilities seniors have in the arts. While not working towards developing seniors into practicing artists themselves, the NAC believes that engaging their creativity can enable active and meaningful aging.

News from Sterling Court: Gardening

At Sterling Court Senior Apartments in Anaheim, CA: Archstone Foundation funded Second Harvest to provide Community Gardens to some of the properties to which they currently provide food.  Gratefully, Sterling Court is one of five EngAGE properties that received free services, including a monthly Master Gardener on site, soil, fertilizer, seedlings, tools, and gloves. This is an organic, edible community garden. Raised planters were built on site.  Program Assistant Nicole Galarado says,  “Everyone continues to love and nurture their gardens. They love that their plants are growing so fast!!”

It’s likely that some of the garden harvest ends up at the monthly birthday celebrations. Here, Joe, a resident, barbecues hamburgers and hot dogs. Residents bring side dishes and desserts. There is always plenty of food and everyone enjoys the gathering!

News from Villa Anaheim: Exercise

In the Exercise Class at Villa Anaheim in Anaheim, California, safe exercise facilitates increased flexibility, strength, and endurance. Coordination and balance exercises help prevent falls and injury.  Instructor Nancy Goodhart reports: “The goal of this class is to affirm and celebrate successes. Participants were reminded of their progress, with regard to increased range of motion, improved balance, and improved coordination. They were congratulated for being in class, for moving their bodies, despite changes, impairments, and disabilities. The new fitness room is equipped with a treadmill, stationary bicycles, free weights, and a bench. Instruction on safe use of the equipment is continual, with some residents performing their personal exercise routine from station to station. Students are motivating themselves to do their circuit training. Ten minutes per station has been suggested. The group, as a whole, demonstrates increased mobility, balance, and flexibility. And they celebrate!”

Worth Repeating: Is Mandatory Retirement Age an Obsolete Concept?

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 8/17/15:

WORTH-REPEATINGThere was a time when retirement meant limited activity — maybe a round of golf, a little puttering in the garden, an occasional game of bridge. There was no concept of working beyond “retirement age” and certainly no concept of reinventing yourself for another productive and fulfilling chapter of life.

All that has changed. But the concept of a mandatory retirement age remains. Paul Irving, chairman of the Milken Institute’s Center for the Future of Aging and editor of the thought-provoking book The Upside of Aging, has this to say:

“One-size-fits-all rules, be they around race or gender or age, are just wrong. They need to be gone. I think testing for capabilities, testing for capacity, testing for talent, ongoing monitoring of effectiveness — all of that is fair. And all of that should happen in a range of fields whether it is in construction work or education. But the notion that someone should be disqualified to work based solely on their age is wrong.”

What do you think about mandatory retirement age?

News from Metro Compton: Celebrating

One of the great advantages of living at an EngAGE community is . . . community! At Metro Compton in Los Angeles, residents recently celebrated birthdays with a cookout. They enjoyed the evening with delicious food they prepared, plus grilled chicken, potato salad, cake, and other refreshments provided by EngAGE. They were delighted with their Dash for Cash gift cards and ended the evening singing and dancing on the patio. Now, that’s a celebration!

Cotton’s Point: Hand-Crafting

At Cotton’s Point Senior Apartments in San Clemente, Crafts Class provides an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums. Residents enjoy spending time creating artwork, and this class allows them to work at their own pace, relax, self-express, and communicate with friends. Last month, instructor Jennifer Fallon brought in clay pots to paint for Independence Day and the students were very enthusiastic about the project. Some continued to work on past craft projects, and they are always welcome to explore the craft cabinet for activities to do once they finish with the group project.
