In 1945, when he returned from WWII, Irvin Kipper bought a store across the street from L.A.’s Farmer’s Market in Hollywood. It gradually evolved from a place that sold flags to a store that sold toys. A year-round place to buy toys was an anomaly back then, but by 1956, when he moved the store to Farmer’s Market, it became a favorite of both locals and tourists. And now, Steve Lopez of the LA Times reports:
The store moved to its current location in the Farmer’s Market in 2000, and last Sunday, Irvin Kipper’s creation celebrated a magical milestone.
Kip’s Toyland has turned 70.
Irvin Kipper is about to turn 99.
He and Gertrude have been married 76 years.
And a third-generation Kipper, Lily, now works in the store with her father and occasionally her grandfather, which means Kip’s Toyland could last another 70 years.
Let’s hope it does!

Dr. Maureen Kellen-Taylor) sharing the poems of two more NoHo SAC poets that are not able to be there. Our MC will be Food4Thot, the spoken word poet who runs the Burbank poetry group. “ICHEON: Reviving the Korean Ceramics Tradition” was an unprecedented exhibition organized by Icheon, South Korea, and presented at the American Museum of Ceramic Art last year. Icheon Ceramics Village in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, has a history of ceramic culture that began over 5000 years ago and has a reputation for its internationally renowned ceramics cultural events. It is home to over 300 ceramics studios where artists use traditional techniques to produce a wide range of functional pottery and artwork. Nearly 40 of the studios still use wood-fired kilns. This series of six videos, made by the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA, shows five ceramic masters from Icheon at work in their studios. It is truly beautiful — and time well spent! — to watch the creative process of each artist.
