Villa Anaheim: Gardening and Exercising Keep Residents Active

Archstone -logoArchstone Foundation has funded Second Harvest of Orange County to provide Community Gardens to the properties where they currently serve food.  Gratefully, Villa Anaheim is one of five properties that is receiving free services, including a monthly Master Gardener on site, soil, fertilizer, seedlings, and potting needs for balcony and patio gardeners. This is an organic, edible community garden. Site Leader Nicole Galardo reports that the garden has overflowed with vegetables and many tomatoes have been harvested.

Safe exercise facilitates increased flexibility, strength, and endurance. Coordination and balance exercises help prevent falls and injury. Instructor Miles Morse: “The first day of exercise class we used a walking DVD, which was very successful. The next day, for the first few minutes we stretched and warmed up. After that we walked around the building for a while. When all that was done, there were about 30 minutes left in the class. The ladies brought down their radio and started to dance for the rest of the class. A woman taught me how to tango. We had a good day that day.”

Artist Carrie Mae Weems Lectures at the National Gallery of Art

“For more than 30 years Carrie Mae Weems [62] has made provocative, socially motivated art that examines issues of race, gender, and class inequality. Often producing serial or installation pieces, her conceptually layered work employs a variety of materials including photographs, text, fabric, sound, digital images, and most recently, video. By referencing past traditions—often through storytelling—Weems sheds light on those who have been left out of the historical record, aspiring to create a more multidimensional picture of the human condition. For the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Lecture Series at the National Gallery of Art, Weems discusses her career and artistic process.” Listen to the 51 minute lecture here.

Cotton’s Point: iPad Art and Collage

PicerneArt classes provide an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums.  The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation and EngAGE teamed to provide Art and Creativity to Cotton’s Point residents for the entire year of 2015.

CP-1

Picerne Foundation Art Instructor Susie Stockholm: “As we enter the last few months of the program. I wanted the regular students to choose how they wanted to spend their collage-making time. So I brought 3 collage books with ideas. Everyone loved looking at the books. When I showed the large paper they would be collaging on, there was a bit of hesitation as this is the biggest they have done so far, but after they got started tearing out images, they were excited. The iPad class moved along pretty quickly since they had all practiced during the week opening and closing the books and pages, as well as bringing up the brush palette. In collage class today, I held up each person’s work and we spent about ½ hour talking about the elements of art, what their struggles were with the big piece, how they got side-tracked and what needed to happen next. Learning to not rush, take time, build layers is challenging. When we talked about everyone’s piece, the comments were what I’d hoped. That things got more interesting when time was taken, layers built up, and surprises happened.”

Adding to the evening’s excitement was the Spoken Word performance by HustleDiva (Charlene Greene) who inspired us with her passionate delivery and wise words on the creativity that resides within us all.

HustleDiva is seen talking with Dominique Moody, whose seminal work for the Nomad (a travelling Small House) has been displayed at PacArts this year. Also on show is a sculpture by artist resident Hyung Mo Lee, recently returned from a residency in Spain.

Marlee’s work will remain on show for the month of October.

Worth Repeating: Student Loan Debt Affects Seniors

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 10/3/14:

WORTH-REPEATING

“An estimated two million Americans age 60 and older are in debt from unpaid student loans, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Its August ‘Household Debt and Credit Report’ said the number of aging Americans with outstanding student loans had almost tripled from about 700,000 in 2005, whether from long-ago loans for their own educations or more recent borrowing to pay for college degrees for family members.” Read more here.

Burbank Senior Artists Colony: Clarence Johnston’s “Beat the Drum” Class

Former resident Clarence Johnston brings his years of musical experience and knowledge of percussion to stress relieving and storytelling through the use of drum techniques and sounds. Clarence gets a lot of joy from the people who show up for his class.  “They always turn up with positive energy and attitude.” A few of the participants are in their 90s, but they are so full of life, and so enjoy the feeling of freedom and fun this workshop gives them, that they feel the years drop off.  Clarence’s performances at BSAC have encouraged more residents to participate in this wonderful workshop.

[EngAGE C.O.O. Maureen Kellen-Taylor wrote a  post for our blog when Clarence was the 2012 recipient of the Living Legends of Jazz Award. In 2011, he was featured in the National Center for Creative Aging’s “Beautiful Minds” series. He provides classes at other EngAGE communities, too.]
