Cantabria/Asturias: Yoga, English Conversation, and Computer Classes

Pamela Roylance leads a weekly yoga class at Cantabria/Asturias. Yoga provides safe exercise and facilitates increased flexibility, strength, and endurance, as well as a relaxed and focused mental state.

Michelle Yu uses games, poetry, magazines, collages and many other things to inspire the students in a weekly basic English conversation class encompassing all levels.

EngAGE Site Leader Joshua Wolf Coleman helps residents learn computer skills. Many of them bring their laptops and personal devices to class to learn how to connect with family via email, to work on Word documents, shop online, or just go over the basics. Here’s one satisfied student!

Ashton Applewhite: “Why Can’t Jerry Brown Be President”

In a recent email newsletter, writer Ashton Applewhite proudly announced:

I finally made it into Playboy.

Not because I hired a professional photographer—hope you like the photo on my new banner—but I’ll take it. Last March I got an email from an editor at Playboy who’d come across comedian Bill Maher’s rant about ageism being “the last socially sanctioned prejudice.” Would I be interested in writing a short essay on the subject? You bet, and here it is (“Why Can’t Jerry Brown Be President”). Another piece is coming out this month in Generations, the journal of the American Society on Aging. My editor there figured it was “likely a first, one of our writers being in both of those publications at the same time! Hah.” Hah indeed!

Metro Compton: Community Garden Grand Opening

An exciting new Community Garden program began in September at Metro Compton, and plots are being assigned for planting this month! Meta Housing contracted with Community Care to provide the residents with instruction, resources, materials, and supplies for one year. EngAGE is working closely with Community Care and Western Senior Housing Management in preparing  the residents for the initial Fall planting. From there, monthly meetings and continual on site support will aid the gardeners with THEIR garden!

Community Care is a non-profit organization founded in 1997. It works with the City of Compton to provide educational and beautification projects, employing volunteers to work with local businesses and organizations to reduce blight and enhance the beauty of the City of Compton, all while instilling a sense of community pride.

Residents will surely be proud of the Metro Compton garden!

Piedmont: Monthly Birthday Celebration + Thursday Night Live Jam Session

The monthly community birthday celebration is a favorite of the residents and provides an opportunity to come together and celebrate life with food, fun and music — fresh deli sandwiches, cake, ice cream, and live entertainment featuring Michael Quest. “That’s my song!” said a resident as they got up to dance.

The twice monthly Thursday Night Live Jam Session brings residents together to sing, play music, or just listen, and jam together. Refreshments are done Hollywood Bowl picnic style, with residents enjoying wine and bringing their favorite snacks to share. One resident did stand up comedy, and another sang soulful tunes as the rest cheered and sang along.

Worth Repeating: Research Shows that Creative Aging is Healthy Aging

WORTH-REPEATINGIf you’re a visual or performing artist of a certain age, you probably don’t need to be convinced of the importance of your art in your life. But did you know that there’s research to back up how you feel? Two studies have documented the positive influence of the arts in the lives of seniors. Yes, like all research papers they’re not exactly light reading, but a couple of basic conclusions are no surprise to creative seniors:

ART CART: SAVING THE LEGACY: A Feasibility Study for a National Model of Health Promotion and Wellness among Older Adults

“We found both the ART CART (older) artists and the control group (of older artists) to be extremely high functioning, often more than the general population. We recommend caution here since the art world is very ageist and older artists may have self-reported as more fit and without impediments.” [And if you perceive yourself or choose to present yourself as more fit than you are, even that seems positive to a layperson like myself.]

Still Kicking:  Aging Performing Artists in NYC and LA Metro Areas:  Information on Artists IV

“This study of aging performing artists 62+ in the metro areas of LA and NYC complements our earlier study of aging visual artists. In NYC, 219 and in LA, 51 professional actors, dancers, choreographers, musicians and singers were studied, with results showing their resilience, tenacity and lifelong engagement with their art and the public.”

Portofino: Pillowcase Dresses for Africa

Making handcrafts of all kinds inspires creativity and gives residents an opportunity to socialize across cultural boundaries.  The Arts and Crafts class recently completed their pillowcase dresses for Africa. Instructor Shirley Yu: “Our pillowcase dresses for Little Dresses for Africa are finally finished! Mrs. Chou, who is 90 years old, has never missed a class since she started coming in July. Even at 90, her vision is still good enough to thread through the needle hole, without the help of spectacles.”
