GEORGE DUKE was a singer, and a piano and synthesizer pioneer. A multiple Grammy winner, his work spanned numerous genres as a recording artist, composer, record producer, professor of music, and music director. He first made a name for himself with the album The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio. He was known primarily for thirty-odd solo albums as well as for his collaborations with other musicians. The album “Dreamweaver” was a tribute to his late wife, released in 2013, a year after she passed away and just a month before Duke himself was gone.
In this second part of the interview, Bobbee talks with George about his orchestral tour de force “Muir Woods Suite” (1993), his “In a Mellow Tone” tribute album to Duke Ellington, and the importance of being supportive of young musicians. Many of the 100 or so guests who were at the Czech embassy in London to celebrate the birthday of Sir Nicholas Winton in May are the offspring of 669 children – mostly Jewish – rescued by Winton from almost certain death in the months before the second world war broke out in 1939. Read more
