Bob-2-1BOB FITZGERALD, Senior Fitness Specialist – Bob had a history of childhood illnesses that made him frail and weak. That changed dramatically when he began weight-training in the late 1940s. He went on to be a professional wrestler, then continued working out and coaching other athletes and sports teams on strength and flexibility training. When he was 50, he entered the New York City marathon, finishing in the upper half of the field. He’s certified by many professional organizations, including AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America), AIFE (American Institution of Fitness Educators), DSW (Desert Southwest Fitness), and NASM (National Association of Sports Medicine). Today, Bob, now 80 years old and still in excellent condition, specializes in working with older adults as a Senior Fitness Training Specialist, offering motivational presentations, and classes for groups and individuals. Bob shares his thoughts on the value of exercise for older adults.

Grantmakers in Aging Photo Contest

GIA Photo Contest

“The FRIENDLY PLACES, FRIENDLY FACES photo contest from Grantmakers In Aging’s Community AGEnda initiative seeks pictures that capture that feeling of age-friendliness. What does it mean to you? How does your photo tell this story? A winning photo could capture a great moment between a grandparent and a grandchild, an older person walking in the neighborhood they love, or people of different ages working together to make their community better.” More info here. Education for Free

Business TechnologyFriend of EngAGE Glenda Glayzer, who blogs at ItAintOver.com, sent us this message recently:

“As I’ve told you before, I’m concentrating on  my writing, gearing up to some serious stuff. Time is running short and I still have lots to say. 🙂

“Anyway, I’ve attended four consecutive Creative Writing classes  through an online portal Ed2Go . When you get to the website and go to  Find a School, you’re prompted to enter your zip code to find the  nearest college offering the courses. You register, pick your course,  pay and you’re ready to go. Don’t do it yet.

“When I went to sign up for my next course, I saw that the school had  raised the price $15. Retired people, even those still working, are  usually on pretty tight budgets. I posted in my class discussion area my disappointment in the price raise, and this naturally provoked further  conversation. One of my fellow students said that her library offers the courses for FREE.

“All you need is a library card to access every course offered by  ed2go. At the library, the classes are called Learn4Life , not ed2go.

“No more worries about the budget. Gobble up the knowledge on all the  subjects offered on the menu. Exercise those brain cells and stay  vibrant.”

Thanks for the tip, Glenda! Not every library offers these courses (quite a wide variety of topics, too), but they are available in Los Angeles libraries. Check your local library to see if you can access them there.

And here are two previous EngAGE Blog posts that suggest other opportunities for free online learning:
