Gould, 92, and her five fellow ‘Rosie the Riveters,’ who worked in a shipyard during World War II, were invited by Vice President Joe Biden after a decades-long letter campaign by Gould that began when Bill Clinton was in office. . . . He pioneered the model during his 24-year tenure as President of the DC Central Kitchen, the country’s first “community kitchen,” where donated food is used to fuel a nationally recognized culinary job training program. Robert has received numerous awards for his leadership in the nonprofit sector, and is the author of the award-winning book, Begging for Change: The Dollars and Sense of Making Nonprofits Responsive, Efficient and Rewarding For All. Tim Carpenter talks to Robert Egger about feeding Los Angeles while revealing the true power of food.
ALAN MANDELL, Actor – Alan Mandell is an actor known for his roles in the works of Shakespeare, Beckett, and others, in stage productions on and off Broadway, throughout California and in Europe. Alan toured France and Germany with the original productions of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” and “Endgame,” directed by Beckett himself. Alan is the recipient of LA Weekly’s first Lifetime Achievement Award. He currently stars in the LA Theatre Works’ radio theatre performance of Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” at the UCLA James Bridges Theater, April 10th through 13th. Tim Carpenter talks to Alan Mandell about Ibsen, acting, and his friendship with playwright Samuel Beckett.
Dame Jane Morris Goodall, DBE, (born 4/3/34) is a British primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace. Considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her 45-year study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania. She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots program, and she has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. We do, too! EngAGE–in walking our talk–is sponsoring a competition for new plays that have something constructive to say about interesting ways of aging, to give hope to younger people and also represent the millions of seniors doing really cool things in their lives.
The winner will have a spot reserved in The Road Theatre‘s annual Summer Playwright Festival This is an eight day fundraising event in late July that mounts 27 staged readings of new plays. The festival is growing larger each year with playwrights from around the country and world participating. Each reading is followed by a talkback with the playwrights, directors, and casts, and a reception featuring live music in our backyard cantina. Competition for selection is stiff as we receive hundreds of submissions. New and established playwrights of any age are encouraged to submit.
Past actors and playwrights have included Craig Wright, Wendy Macleod, Mo Gaffney, Keith Huff, Brett Neveu, Brian Cranston, Kathy Baker, Perry King, Rondi Reed, Michael O’Neill, Harold Gould, and many others.

From an interview in the Paris Review: Roberto Calasso [72] is a literary institution of one. He has directed Adelphi, Italy’s most prestigious publishing house, for forty years, while publishing twelve books of his own, including an international best seller on Greek myth titled The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony. In a country where intellectuals like to complain, perhaps more than elsewhere, that literary culture has fallen by the wayside, Calasso has come to stand for a lost ideal: a writer on esoteric topics, a book collector, a translator of Nietzsche and Karl Kraus, and an editor who oversees the publication of some ninety books a year, in every domain from the scientific to the poetic, with a fiction list that ranges from Nabokov and Borges to Kundera and Bolaño.
