“The rotunda of the Los Angeles Public Library Central Branch is an ornate entrance to the early cultural spirit of the city. The crown is a mosaic pyramid topping the interior dome, and the lobby wears a mural like a cloak.
“The murals were a civic commission granted to Dean Cornwell that show ‘Four Great Eras of California History’ in a series of four panels: ‘The Founding of Los Angeles,’ ‘The Discovery Era,’ ‘The Mission Era’ and ‘The Americanization of California.’ . . .

Still working at nearly 85 years old, William Klein has gone rogue in at least four different fields: abstract painting, photography, filmmaking and commercial copy writing.” He lives in Paris now, but visited New York recently to promote his latest book, William Klein ABC. The book is described as “a visual survey of his long and varied career. The word “fabulous” must have been invented for Elaine Stritch, the award-winning actress/vocalist who is known for her performance of “The Ladies Who Lunch” in Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical Company; her 2001 one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty; and for her recent role as Jack Donaghy’s mother, Colleen, on NBC’s 30 Rock. Her name is inextricably linked with New York, but she’s decided to move back to Michigan, marking the end of an era. Read more here, in the New York Times, of course.
