Worth Repeating: The Friendship Line – Mental Health Hotline
“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 4/3/12:
“The Friendship Line is a suicide prevention and mental health hotline for seniors. Last year, they got 18,000 calls. But they also make outgoing calls to remind elders to take their medication or to offer emotional support . . . . They made 40,000 of those calls in 2011. The line was started by Patrick Arbore, in 1973, because he didn’t like the way seniors were treated.” Click here to read more.

Author Max Evans, 88, Is a Western Legend
American Cowboy magazine recently interviewed legendary western writer Max Evans. “Evans has published 25 books and won multiple Spur, Wrangler, and Owen Wister awards. Michael John Garces and Peter Howard of the Cornerstone Theater Company: Michael John Garces (far left) is Cornerstone’s Artistic Director, where his directing credits include Café Vida, Making Paradise, and The Falls at the Guthrie Theater. He also wrote Consequence out of story circles with students, teachers, administrators and parents in Kern County, and Los Illegals, created in residence with day laborers and domestic workers. Peter Howard (near left) is a founding member of Cornerstone, where he has performed in, written, or otherwise collaborated on scores of productions in LA and around the country since 1986. His American Muslim adaptation of You Can’t Take It with You was the first ever approved by the Kaufman and Hart estate. Toyo Ito, 71, Wins Pritzker Architecture Prize
“Toyo Ito, a 71-year-old architect based in Japan, is the winner of the 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize. The jury honored Ito for his more than four-decade career, in which he has created architecture that ‘projects an air of optimism, lightness and joy … infused with both a sense of uniqueness and universality.’ . . . Unlike so many of today’s so-called ‘starchitects,’ Ito cares about personal connections. He has built his share of splashy icons: apartments, fire hydrant red, in Barcelona; the stunning solar-powered stadium in Taiwan. Summer Arts Programs Intern Opening

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Intern will be placed with the EngAGE Programs Teams at NoHo and Burbank Senior Arts Colonies. These colonies are home to active seniors who lead busy, productive and interesting lives as they continue to develop their skills and talents. Interns will participate in the beginning phases of a project to provide senior artists with the knowledge and resources to become digitally and technologically adept in order to promote their work more widely and participate in on-line arts communities. The interns will also have the opportunity to give creative input about the programs and projects they encounter as well as collaborate with older artists with unique artistic and cultural experience. This will be an immersion experience in an Arts and Aging organization with international reach that is also on the National Endowment for the Arts’ 10 Best Practices Nationally list. The internship will provide access to pioneers in this burgeoning professional field. After 10 weeks students will have a better grasp of the overall potential for work in the field as well as how to pursue particular paths of interest. This is a paid position.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Intern will need to be approved by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and eligibility is limited to currently enrolled undergraduate college students who reside or attend college in Los Angeles County. Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 1, 2013 or will complete their undergraduate degree between May 1 – September 1, 2013. Interns will be experienced in the use of digital media and computer programs useful for visual, performance and/or literary arts. (word-processing, film-making/editing, soundtrack, music, photography, etc). Will need good interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to drive own car between Burbank and NoHo sites.
