News from Bella Vita: Dinner with EngAGE

In November, EngAGE welcomed our new affordable housing property, Bella Vita in Carson, CA, with a “Meet and Greet” Mexican dinner for all residents to enjoy. Program Director Sandra Vargas distributed surveys to find out the residents’ programming interests. The management company (Solari Enterprises) and EngAGE staff were thrilled with the resident turnout. Residents are looking forward to establishing a daily routine that incorporates EngAGE programming in their lives. EngAGE ended the celebration with a raffle of gift cards.

EngAGE embraces a whole-person approach to creative living, providing college-level programs in the arts, wellness, and lifelong learning.

Spotlight on Pac Arts Resident Ziggy Mrkich: Oscar Nominated Animation Short Film Series

Ziggy Mrkich, resident of the Pacific Avenue Arts Colony in San Pedro, CA, is the founder and festival director of the San Pedro International Film Festival, now in its eighth year. Through the non-profit organization she founded, Ms. Mrkich is launching a Low Power FM (LPFM) radio station in San Pedro, to be announced later this year. (LPFM radio stations broadcast at 100 watts and reach an area with a radius of approximately three and one-half miles.)


Ziggy freelanced as a photographer in her native Australia for several music magazines and national newspapers photographing major acts during the early ’90’s. She began a short career in radio as a deejay until she completed studies in Photography/Film & TV at the Western Australian College of Media Design and Fine Arts. She lived in Croatia from the age of 13 to 19, under the political influence of the former Yugoslavia, and came to the United States in 1995 after spending time in Australia, Toronto, and London. She worked in Hollywood as a development executive for production companies and studios and later curated film festivals in Los Angeles as Program Director.

Ziggy founded and ran the Dubrovnik International Film Festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 2003-2006. As Festival Director, guests included Christopher Walken, Emily Watson, John Hurt, Deborah Kara Unger, and Jonathan Tucker. In addition, she has previously worked with the Croatian Consulate in Los Angeles on showcasing programs of Croatian films.

Throughout her photography career, Ziggy participated in several photography exhibitions which have included solo exhibitions in Australia and the US. In 2009, her work was included in the opening of the Annenberg Community Beach House in partnership with the City of Santa Monica for their inaugural Beach Stories exhibition which later went on display at St. John’s Hospital.

Ziggy’s photography has also been used in feature films such as No Strings Attached and Paranormal Activity 2. She is now producing a feature film to be released in 2021.

Art by LBSAC Resident Alva MacNeal Included in Black History Month Museum Exhibit

Alva McNeal, resident at Long Beach Senior Arts Colony in Long Beach, CA, was one of 18 African American visual artists chosen by the acclaimed artist Charles Bibbs and the Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce to be featured in the “Images of Black Life, Culture and History” exhibit at the San Bernadino County Museum. The exhibit, celebrating Black History Month, runs February 1–28, 2019. Everyone at EngAGE, Inc., and LBSAC sends their heartfelt congratulations to Alva on this impressive acknowledgement of her artistic talents. News from Magnolia@Highland: Holiday Cards Bring Love and Appreciation

In San Bernardino, CA, residents of the Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments who participate in the Artist Roundtable every week worked hard creating meaningful holiday cards for family and friends. The holiday cards were designed using watercolors, then sent out to loved ones this holiday season. Residents were thrilled to receive phone calls from recipients expressing how much they love and appreciate the handmade cards they received in the mail.

Research demonstrates that participating in arts activities improves the health and quality of life of older people.

News from Cotton’s Point: Happy Valentine’s Day

The younger generation is keeping Valentine’s Day alive, fun, and special at Cotton’s Point Senior Apartments in San Clemente, CA.

Did you know that every year more than 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolates are sold across the country?

Did you know that February 14th is the second largest card-giving day of the year?

The Visits of Love Club of San Clemente High School decided to keep up the Valentine’s Day tradition. Students made over 80 cards and delivered them to the residents. They wanted to make sure each resident was feeling the love this February.

The Visits of Love Club has made a lot of friends here at Cotton’s Point. The students come to their potlucks and holiday parties, and participate in making crafts throughout the year. Friendships are formed and memories are made.

News from Andalucía: Holiday Party

Residents at Andalucía Senior Apartments in Van Nuys, CA, enjoyed another holiday meal together. WSH apartment manager Louis worked hard to make a fun party with wine and Chinese food, and he served it all himself!

It takes a village. Program Director Elizabeth Sampson had to move fast when plating and serving 45 people.

It all worked out in the end, a great party was achieved, and all had a good time.
