Audition Opportunity in the Los Angeles Area for 65+

Friend of EngAGE, Scott Kaiser, MD, Chief Innovation Officer at MPTF, shared this opportunity for non-professional performers over the age of 65 to join the cast of Gala:

Todd McQuade, the Associate Program Manager at the UCLA Center for the Art of Performance, is casting Galaa performance by Jerome Belthat will be presented  at the Theater at the Ace Hotel in DTLA.  This performance features a cast of 20 performers of all ages and backgrounds. He is not looking for professional performers/dancers. Rather he is looking for seniors who have an interest in movement and a desire to be on stage.

More information about Gala:

Gala presents a cast of people all of whom have their own relationship to dance and skill. Some are professional dancers, some are dance enthusiasts, and some are not dancers at all. There is no choreography in Gala, performers move from their own backgrounds and abilities.

“Gala offers a different approach to dance. In this collective art form, choreographer Jérôme Bel brings together dance professionals and amateurs of diverse backgrounds. The diversity of the acts never calls on us to pass judgement, but they reveal the way in which each person’s cultural repertoire involves him or her in a singular relationship with that desire for something else other than dance — joy, accomplishment, transcendence, perhaps?”

“The principal idea of this show is to bring a group of twenty very diverse people together onto the stage: dancers, of course, some actors, but most of all amateurs among whom are children, teenagers, and senior citizens. The main goal of the performance is about building a community by gathering people as diverse as possible.

Performers must be available in the evenings from January 26th to February 2nd, and February 9th and 10th. Below is a detailed calendar.

Performers will be paid $1000.00 for all performances and rehearsals.

Audition process:

– Provide a 2 minute video of yourself dancing solo in any way that you like with or with out music.

– Provide two selfies, one portrait and one full-body image, taken as the same time as the video.

– Please wear form-fitting brightly colored dance attire in both.

– Both the video and the selfies can be done on a smartphone. Please do not use a professional service. This process should take all of 15 minutes.

– Please post the video to a cloud service such as Google Drive, or YouTube, or send it to Todd via a free file transfer service that can handle large video files (like WeTransfer).

Company, Company is an outreach program which will present the final thirty minutes of the show in community settings. Exact details of these outreach programs will be confirmed by mid-December. There will not be more than four of these half hour programs over the course of the two days.

News from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony: LMU Composting Project

Resident gardeners from Long Beach Senior Arts Colony in Long Beach, CA, met with staff and students from Loyola Marymount University to see how we could partner in a pilot gardening composting program. The campus guests toured our rooftop garden and then gathered in the community center to discuss next steps. The resident gardeners took a survey, which offered feedback on their satisfaction with the garden. With management support, we are looking forward to working with LMU to initiate an intergenerational composting project, which will start in the spring of 2019. See our previous post about this project for more information.

EngAGE connects across generations, helping older adults become involved with younger people in their communities as mentors, sages, and neighbors.
