News from Magnolia@Highland: Private Piano Lessons from a Talented Young Student

At Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments in San Bernardino, CA, our Program Director’s daughter, Lauren, started teaching private piano lessons in September. Lauren is 18 and a music performance major at Cal State Long Beach. She currently has 6 students who each get a 30 minute lesson once a week. We’re especially excited to have her on board because her lessons are a great example of inter-generational programming. Here’s part of her first monthly report:

These piano lessons are structured to teach students not only how to play piano, but also some basic music theory and understanding of how music and the piano work, as well as practice and performance skills. Overall, the lessons are primarily for the residents’ enjoyment, and to give them opportunities to learn new things and acquire new skills.

Participants were very happy with the first month of lessons. All shared mutual excitement regarding what they were learning, and they expressed that they felt they were learning a lot of valuable information. One resident shared that some of the hand stretches and exercises she learned in her piano lessons were later praised by her physical therapist, so she felt that the piano lessons were very helpful to her.

Piano lessons clearly have a positive impact on the participants. It is very fulfilling for the participants as they accomplish more and more improvements during each lesson.

Tanya Kutukdjian, Programs Assistant at Park Plaza Senior Apartments in North Hollywood, CA, reports: We had a great time during the 4th of July event with entertainer, Vrezh. The residents came to the party dressed up in their patriotic outfits. We started with the national anthem, then listened to Vrezh play more patriotic music with some residents joining in on the singing. After that, we had some international music and the residents danced the night away. As always, we had the regulars who entertained us with their dance moves and our singers who shared their favorite songs. Many of the residents were able to share this night with their grandchildren, which is always a nice treat.

News from Tavarua: Gardening and Art

The vegetable garden at Tavarua Senior Apartments in Carlsbad, CA, is producing fine looking tomatoes for one of our residents. She has wonderful success with her use of chicken manure! We meet monthly to share our best growing techniques.

Tavarua has a new art class with a new art teacher, Mary Stabile. Classes are twice a month. Recently, the residents worked on a still life of a kettle. Here you can see the teacher going over step-by-step how to approach this painting.

Research demonstrates that participating in arts activities improves the health and quality of life of older people.

News from ACE/121: Life Drawing and Cyanotypes

Residents at ACE/121 in Glendale, CA, enjoy the second open Life Drawing class. We hold them in the evening for 3 hours. The model and artists usually move through poses ranging from 1 minute to 20 minutes. This allows the artists to practice quick sketching skills as well as perspective and detail work. It’s a pleasant event, quiet and productive.

Cathy Immodino, an exhibition artist in the Reimagining America exhibition recently held at the ACE/121 gallery, teaches a cyanotype workshop outside the gallery open to residents and the general public. Cyanotype is a method of using sunlight to develop images.
