Art instructor Eddie Stokes encourages creativity in artists of all ages!
EngAGE changes lives by transforming affordable senior and multigenerational apartment communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness, and creativity.
The SCAN Foundation has an annual call for artists with a cash prize contest for their Holiday Card. They reached out to seniors in the Long Beach community to submit their artwork by May 31st. The first place prize winner is awarded $500 and their artwork image will used for the Foundation’s annual holiday card. The 2nd and 3rd place winners are awarded $250.
With encouragement and submission suggestions from the Program Director and the art instructors at Long Beach Senior Arts Colony in Long Beach, CA, talented resident artists applied to the contest.
Numerous submissions from senior artists throughout the Long Beach area were received by The SCAN Foundation and finalists were selected. LBSAC residents Martha Aguilar won 1st place for Elephant, and Alva McNeal won 2nd place for Rites of Passage-Enchanting Gift! We are all so proud!
Thanks to The SCAN Foundation for making this holiday card contest available to our talented seniors, and to all the accomplished senior artists in the Long Beach community!

She is a seasoned expert in aging, arts, and lifelong learning, and we all look forward to working with her to build our organization for the future.”
Laura Mason, Executive Director of EngAGE Northern California – Laura will be responsible for developing strategic partnerships, projects, and resources to expand EngAGE’s award-winning program model in Northern California. As a member of the senior management team, Laura will play an active role in developing and driving EngAGE’s overall strategy, governance, and vision for the future. EngAGE is noted for its combination of affordable housing opportunities for seniors and families, and creative, multi-generational programming provided at no charge for residents.
Prior to joining EngAGE, Laura was the Program Officer for the May & Stanley Smith Charitable Trust Elders program area, with a portfolio of more than $4 million in annual grantmaking designed to improve the health, quality of life, and community engagement opportunities for older adults. Prior to that, Laura served as a Senior Program Officer for the San Francisco-based Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund, where she worked with more than a dozen foundations and funds to develop, implement, and evaluate grantmaking programs across diverse program areas including aging, health, and social services. Laura is an active member of the Bay Area nonprofit community and currently serves on the board of directors of Art With Elders, the Eva Gunther Foundation, and Menorah Park.
Laura has a B.A. in Social Science from San Francisco State University and a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco.
Curating for this show at our ACE/121 Gallery was provided by the Arroyo Arts Collective, a grassroots, community-based organization of artists, poets, musicians, performers, craftspersons and supporters of the creative community in Northeast Los Angeles.

At two San Bernardino, CA, communities, residents are enjoying exploring different art and craft techniques.
Craft Class Instructor Clarisa Arostegui at Magnolia at 9th Senior Apartments encourages residents to think creatively and develop their current skills while challenging them to learn new things. They loved working on this project. The outcome clearly shows their no-longer-hidden abilities to create beautiful work!
At Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments, residents are learning a new art technique via You Tube: paper beadmaking. They are challenged with transferring their knowledge from the video demonstrations while being able to explore and create individually. Everyone is enjoying learning a new skill!

SARAH JACOBUS is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Fine Arts Degree in creative writing. She left a job as a staff social worker with Jewish Family Service to start Imagine That!, an independent practice facilitating workshops in storytelling and poetry for elders in a variety of settings, including residential care, senior centers, and senior housing. She is a Certified Facilitator and Master Trainer of TimeSlips, an improvisational storytelling process that focuses on imagination rather than memory. Sarah leads a creative storytelling class for EngAGE, Inc., at Park Plaza Senior Apartments in North Hollywood, CA, and is set to begin a class in storytelling at Piedmont Senior Apartments, also in North Hollywood, and one in creative writing at the Burbank Senior Artists Colony. Sarah is committed to the practice of creative engagement as a tool for meaningful self-expression, community building—and fun.
TANYA KUTUKDJIAN has a Master of Science degree in Assistive Technology and Human Services from CalState Northridge. She is a Program Assistant for EngAGE, Inc., where she has worked for almost ten years, creating and coordinating events to promote active and healthy aging for seniors. She works alongside Sarah during her writing group at Park Plaza where she serves as a translator for the Armenian residents who are not fluent in English.
