News from Park Plaza
The weekly exercise class facilitates both cardio-vascular health and muscle strength. Residents are working on core stability, balance, flexibility and leg and back alignment and strength. Work is done standing, in chairs, and with elastic bands. This is Terese Tintocalis’ second month as instructor and the class is responding to her really well. Terese plays music, incorporates dance moves, brings in hand-eye coordination, exercises with balls, does floor Pilates on mats — she changes things up!

Crafts Class offers the opportunity for creative expression as well as community-building conversation. The class teaches students how to make useful and beautiful items that can be given as gifts or kept and enjoyed. This month the projects included: Box Cutting Tool (for making yarn scarf), Castle Scarves, Kitchen Towels and Coasters.
Instructor Shirley Yu reported: “Mrs. Tsa Tran told me that the coasters are so beautiful, she won’t use them and will try to save them for her grandkids as an heirloom. The group made some for ESL Bingo prizes—they were on the table and everyone seemed so delighted. Castle scarves are also very popular; students cannot stop making them. I’ve lost count of how many pieces I’ve helped them to finish!”

Concert by Lilia, a Karoake singer who can sing in four languages: Residents Cora and her husband, Raphael, are both musicians, so Cora took the microphone and she and Lilia sang a duet together – quite beautiful. Then Raphael played on the piano while Cora sang along side him. The crowd was enchanted!
English Conversation Class: Instructor Michelle uses games, poetry, magazines, collages and whatever inspires her to get the attentive group conversing in English.

One Woman Campaign to Bring Back Ladies’ Bridge Lunch
Maggy Simony, 92-year-old Florida resident, wants to bring back the Ladies’ Bridge Lunch, a tradition popular in the early and mid-20th century. David Scott, a professor of leisure studies at Texas A&M University who wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on bridge, “calls Ms. Simony a ‘lay anthropologist’ who has unearthed relics of an era when leisure meant seeing friends, not watching TV or surfing the Internet. ‘It wasn’t about competition,’ he says. ‘It was about community.'”

She created the film, “The Beauty of Aging,” out of a desire to find inspiring models of aging for herself and other women. Laurie produced and directed a documentary short, “SCAT, The Story of ‘Scatman.'” John Larkin and produced and directed “Greedy for Life,” a 35-minute short on Shirley & Lavada, two of the women in The Beauty of Aging project.
