EngAGE changes lives by transforming affordable senior and multigenerational apartment communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness, and creativity.
Lisa Cirincione is the ESL Instructor at La Coruna Senior Apartments in Van Nuys, CA. She has been working with James and his wife, Hannah, improving their English for almost two years. Hannah was VERY excited to vote this year as an American citizen, but didn’t have any way of getting to the polls on Election Day. So, Lisa picked her up and took her to her polling station, waited in line with her while she voted, and then drove her home. This is the sort of effort, above and beyond job responsibilities, that make the employees at EngAGE so special and valuable. Thank you, Lisa! Hannah was so proud and pleased to be able to exercise her right to vote as an American citizen.

EngAGE is fortunate that Annie Buckley, professor of Visual Studies at California State University, San Bernardino, reached out to Program Director Alma Wright with an offer to provide and supervise volunteer college students as teachers for our residents. We’ll share more about this program in a later post! For now, we hope you’ll join us for this event featuring the artwork of our talented Magnolia@9th residents who studied with the CSUSB volunteers!

Next year we’ll be celebrating the 20th anniversary of EngAGE, Inc., but the organization did not spring into being without a lot of thought and preparation. In 1998, our CEO/Founder, Tim Carpenter, began the process of turning his idea into reality: create a vibrant senior housing environment similar to college using the arts as the glue binding the community rather than just the age of the residents. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of that effort, a small group of close friends, family, co-workers, and Board members gathered for a surprise party for Tim. EngAGE COO Nancy Goodhart was the instigator of the plan; EngAGE California Board member Dr. Gregory M. Berkhoff and EngAGE National Director of Grants Robin Hart handled the logistics. Greg lured Tim to a restaurant in Westwood where he was greeted by everyone shouting, “Surprise!” And he was surprised! The night included a video looking back at Tim’s life, and a musical performance by his daughter, Zoë. We were all delighted to be able to celebrate this milestone with Tim!
